how to eliminate a trace of GRUB that stops me from opening Win10

I have a hard drive that has data on it I want. It came from a failed PC that had Win10 on one drive and Ubuntu on another. The Ubuntu drive failed and was disconnected. Months later the old PC failed and I can't open the Win10 HDD with my new PC.

When I try to boot from the HDD I get a black screen with:

    error: no such device: b3eabeb5-992f-49e1-88c0-56be090c790a.
    Entering rescue mode>
    grub rescue>

When I hit ENTER I get another grub rescue>. I think, even though Ubuntu is not on the HDD, that a trace of grub is. I might be able to fix it by installing Ubuntu in my new PC and than uninstalling it, hoping the uninstall would remove that trace of grub, but I am reluctant to risk screwing up my new C:/ drive.

Does anyone have any idea for removing stray bits of Grub so I can boot up my old HDD?

    John

    :)

Remove Linux installation from Windows10 machine

    Win7 was upgraded to Win10

    1) When I start my machine I get the GRUB prompt to either start Win7 or Linux mint

How do I get rid of Linux and GRUB?

    2) When Win loads I get asked if I want to boot into Win10 or (a no longer existing) Ubuntu

How do I get rid of that.

I haven't deleted or formatted the linux partition. Can I do that without startinjg from a WinBootCD?

    Refresh UEFI-OS-List

I recently unistalled UbuntuGNOME from my notebook. There is no trace of it; GRUB is also deleted and I restored the MBR. However, Windows still displays "ubuntu" in the Shift+Restart menu. When I select it the BIOS tells me "The selected boot device has
    failed."

Is there any way to refresh or manually edit this page? It's just a cosmetical issue but it still anoys me.

how to eliminate a trace of GRUB that stops me from opening Win10

Don't boot to the HDD, Boot to a Windows setup DVD or USB, or to a Windows PE Windows repair disk e.g. Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

Rewrite the MBR with bootrec /fixmbr to overwrite the GRUB MBR.

Assuming the Windows folder on the HDD is in the C:\ folder, fix the Boot Configuration Database to boot from the active system partition with BCDBOOT c:\Windows
