Windows 10: How to enable Fingerprint recognition for windows hello

I'm not using a domain server, just my personal laptop

Windows Hello fingerprint recognition

My laptop got a fingerprint scanner, but I can't use it to sign in. This is what it says in the settings: "There is no fingerprint scanner that is compatible with the Windows Hello fingerprint recognition." What can I do?

 

Using external fingerprint scanner to login to Windows 10

The Windows Hello not working issue has appeared after the Windows 10 Creators Update
under many forms and error messages. I resume below most of the known remedies.

Enable Biometric in Local Group Policy

Some crucial system settings like the Local Group Policy could be modified during the upgrading of Windows 10 Creators Update which breaks the face recognition and fingerprint reader’s feature of Windows Hello. To exclude that likelihood, you should check the biometric settings in Local Group Policy.

1. Run the Local Group Policy (gpedit.msc).
   
   For Windows Home see
   How to Access the Group Policy Editor, Even in Windows Home.
   
2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Biometrics.
   
3. Double-click the item "Allow the use of biometrics setting", tick Enabled and OK.
   
4. Do the same to the item "Allow users to log on using biometrics".
   
5. Reboot.
   

If the above steps were not enough, do this :

1. Repeat steps 1 & 2
   
2. Click on "Facial Features" and double-click "Configure enhanced anti-spoofing".
   
3. Set it to Disabled and OK.
   
4. Reboot.
   

Reset Facial Recognition and/or Fingerprint Options

• Go to PC Settings > Accounts > Sign-In options.
  
• Locate "Fingerprint" or "Facial Recognition" and click "Remove" under them.
  
• Choose "Get Started" and follow on-screen instructions to reset Fingerprint and Facial Recognition.
  
• Reboot
  

Update Webcam/Fingerprint Driver

• In Device Manager, locate and expand the entries for the biometrics device.
  
• Right-click the device and choose "Uninstall".
  
• In the Action menu select "Scan for hardware changes",
  and let Windows detect and update the drivers.

Windows Hello Fingerprint issue

We understand that you are unable to use Windows Hello Fingerprint to sign in to Windows. It would be great if you can reply with the details requested below:

• When you say, “I am not getting the option to log-in into windows using fingerprint.” What login options do you see on the login screen?
  
• What happens when you try to use the Windows Hello Fingerprint scanner to login to Windows?
  
• Were you able to use the Windows Hello Fingerprint to login to Windows earlier?
  

Ideally, on the login screen, you will see Sign-in options that allows you to use different sign-in methods to login to Windows.



As you have mentioned that you are able to use the Fingerprint scanner on websites, I would suggest you to refer the steps mentioned below and see if that helps:

1. On the login screen, click on Sign-in options.
   
2. Click on the Fingerprint icon, scan the Fingerprint, and see if you are able to sign in.

If the issue persists, try removing the Fingerprint and add it again. Refer the steps mentioned below:

1. Press Windows key + I, to open
   Settings.
   
2. Click on Accounts and click on
   Sign-in options on the left pane.
   
3. Now, click on Windows Hello Fingerprint and click on
   Remove.
   
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to remove the Fingerprint.
   
5. Once done, click on Set up and follow the on-screen instructions to add the Fingerprint.
