Windows Defender in Windows 10?

I've never used the Group Policy setting for this, so I can't say whether there's any difference in the implementation. This article discusses both of the registry locations:

But the PowerShell Set-MpPreference cmdlet is now the de facto advanced configuration interface for Windows Defender on the Home edition of Windows 10; and it also greatly simplifies the configuration of Windows Defender on systems that have the Group
Policy Editor:

Block Potentially Unwanted Applications with Windows Defender AV

Set-MpPreference (defender)

So this should probably be considered the standard interface for enabling PUA Protection. We generally only use Group Policy to set parameters that can’t be set with PowerShell, like DisableRoutinelyTakingAction:

All you are doing is enabling another (very worthwhile imo) MS feature - not messing with it.

 

On the above on windows 7, MSE would block PUPs & PUAs in software wrappers(and very well at that)

I speak both English and German, thanks. Ok I'll give it a shot, seeing this reg addition has been a round a while.

 

Open up NotePad copy & paste the following in:

Code: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows Defender\MpEngine] "MpEnablePus"=dword:00000001[/quote] then save as MpEnablePus.reg and file type: "all files"

and lastly double click to merge and reboot.
Now you're protected.

How good is the PUA protection in this thing?

 

I have tried and it seems to work. I have disabled it because I find it too intrusive. It even deleted uTorrent from my machine, because it was bundled with OpenCandy. At least, it seems to work for its PUP blocking purpose.

It is a good addition for newbies, but can be annoying for power users. I will certainly put it on newly formatted pcs.
