Windows 10: How to fix 2nd display not working after 24H2 update

Hello everyone and thank you in advance for your help!My regular configuration is as follows: - Lenovo X1 Carbon attached to Lenovo dock and LG 32UN650 Monitor, USB wireless keyboard and mouse connected via dock- When working, I close the lid to my laptop and have the display settings to be set as duplicate when laptop closed it acts as 2nd display only and my complete desktop is on the large monitorMy setup has been working without issue for years until today when I ran the Windows 11 24H2 updated. After updating, my second monitor is displaying a lot of noise and is unusable when it is the

To assist you better, I would like to know what is the model number of the computer?

The issue you are facing could be due to the display driver is outdated. Let’s try simple troubleshooting steps and check if that helps in resolving the issue.

Method 1

I recommend you to uninstall/reinstall the display adapter driver and check. Follow the below steps:

• 
  Press Windows key + X and click on
  Device manager.
  
• 
  Locate for display adapter and click on it to expand.
  
• 
  Right click on the device and click on
  uninstall.
  
• 
  Once you are done uninstalling the driver, restart the computer. It will automatically install the generic display adapter driver.
  

If this doesn’t help to fix the issue. I suggest you to update the display adapter driver. Skip step3 from the above steps and right click on the
device and click on update.

Method 2.

If the above method did not help to fix the issue, I would suggest you to
go to the computer manufacturer website and download the latest display adapter driver. If the display driver is not available for Windows 10, try installing the available driver in compatibility mode and check.

• 
  Right-click on the setup file of the driver and select Properties.
  
• 
  Select Compatibility tab.
  
• 
  Check Run this program in Compatibility mode.
  
• 
  Let the driver install and then check the functionality.

Are you able to follow them?
In post 29 was the suggested dism repair command.

 

When will MS fix this KB3172985 update problem?

Yes, it is an ongoing issue for months without a well known fix TBH. Microsoft is releasing Anniversary update for Windows 10 on 2nd August, that would be a major update to windows 10.

I would suggest you doing that manually using an ISO which would serve two purposes:

• Would make your system up to date.
• Correct your windows update issue also.

You can drop me a message in this thread on 2nd, I would provide the links and steps for repair Install through an ISO. (ISO isn't released yet)
