Win11 has suddenly started a problem with renaming files. Once the filename is open for editing, it is possible to place the cursor, but after placing the cursor it reverts to the whole filename being highlighted, therefore impossible to edit, only to change the whole name. This appeared yesterday.

Searching for a string within a filename in File Explorer

I want to search a folder for filenames that contain the word "Committee". When in File Explorer, I type "Committee" into the Search field and hit enter. It finds (highlights in yellow) files that start with "Committee" but not the ones where "Committee"
is embedded in the file name. For example:

    • "Committee-Mission-Roles-and-Responsibilities" = finds it and highlights "Committee" in yellow
    • "19510701ListClubCommitteesReportDirectorsBW" = Lists this file but does not highlight "Committee" in yellow
    • "20150526MinutesBoard" = Lists this file because the word "Committee" is in the text of the file.
Is there a way to do a search that lists only filenames that contain the word "Committee"? I don't want files listed if the word "Committee" is not part of the filename.

    Editing a filename in Windows11 v22H2

I've recently updated Win11 to the 22H2 version. It seems to have changed something in File Explorer when I want to edit a filename. If I try to rename a file (preferably by hitting F2, but it also happens if I right-click and select 'rename'), the whole filename keeps being selected/highlighted. At the moment I actually just want to add numbers to a whole bunch of filenames, but it seems that Windows REALLY wants me to retype the whole filename every time, instead of just adding two numbers. I can't unselect the whole filename to just add to it or delete a part of it.

There are several 'workarounds', e.g. if I'm very quick, I can hit the left cursor button and then a number key very fast and get it done. But I don't win the race every time, and then end up overwriting the whole old filename and have to Escape and try again. Second possibility is to copy the full highlighted filename, add what I want to add and then paste the whole old filename next to the new part, without needing to retype it. But I don't want workarounds. Preferably I want Windows not to go backwards and take away things that have been super simple since Win95. How to fix a new problem with editing filenames in Win11 File Explorer. :)

Am I being dense - e.g. missing a setting I can change - or is this for real?

(I have seen a post from almost a year ago where someone complained about this too, but in the thread someone else was also moaning about single-clicking now opening files. That problem can be changed in settings, so it makes me wonder if my laborious renaming issue can also be customised away.)

    Thanks

Select only files that have "Copy" in the filename?
