Windows 10: "How to Fix Access Denied and Permission Issues for Encrypted Files After Reinstalling...

I initially had Windows 11, and after encountering issues, I decided to reset my PC and reinstall Windows. To prepare for this, I copied my important files to a USB drive. However, upon trying to move these files back to my PC, I encountered a problem with a specific folder containing over 200 photos and videos. This folder has a lock symbol on its icon, suggesting it might be encrypted or have special permissions i don't know.When attempting to transfer this folder back to my PC, I receive an error message as shown in the first screenshot indicating that I need permission from "Everyone"

"Access is Denied" despite installed encryption key and added permissions

I've added the permissions following the instructions you've provided and I still have the same issue.

When I attempt to clear the "encrypt contents to secure data" checkbox (under properties, advanced) I get "An error occurred applying attributes to the file:

[FILE]

Access is denied."

When I attempt to open the file, I get: "There was an error opening this document. Access is denied."

Not sure where this is going wrong.

Accessing encrypted files

I have files on my backup hard drive which I cannot access - they have little padlock symbols on them.

After trying many different things, I get two messages:

1. There is a problem decrypting the files - access denied (or words to that effect)

2. "You need administrator permission to access this file" I am listed as the administrator on this computer.

I did not knowingly encrypt these files, just backed them up on the HD.

When I go through "properties" the permissions I see against my name have grey ticks, rather than black ones.

This suggests they are not actually effective/available.

Please help!!
