Windows 10: How to fix error message "get an app to open this ms-xbl-multiplayer link"

I tried to join my friend that's playing Star Wars Battlefront on xbox. I'm on the xbox app on windows 11. He sent me an invite and when I accepted it I got the error message in the title. Xbox app is up to date. Game bar is working. I have no idea how to proceed.
