How to fix low audio volume on Windows 11 devices

If you experience low audio volume playback on Windows 11, then you may be affected by the same issue that I ran into over this weekend. When I turned on my HP laptop I realized quickly that something was not right.

First, I thought that audio pfayback was muted, as I could not hear anything while playing music or watching videos. When I moved the volume to 100%, I could barely hear the playback.

Something was not right. I first tried the usual fixes:

    • Make sure that audio playback was not muted with a click on the sound icon in Windows.
    • Make sure that audio was not muted by HP, with a tap on the F5 key.
    • Make sure that volume was set to 100% in Windows.
    • Make sure that the audio controls of the laptop, on HP that is F7 for increasing the volume, was set to an appropriate level.

Once I realized that the low volume was not caused by this, I started to investigate the issue further. The Get Help tool of the Windows 11 system was no help, unfortunately. While it displayed a few help links, it did not help in the end.

I restarted the PC to make sure that the audio playback issue was not caused by a fluke; it was not.

Next up was a check of the Device Manager. The audio components were installed fine and the driver was the latest as well.

Then, after playing around with audio device settings in Windows, I found the culprit.

Note: This guide does not cover other causes, including damaged audio equipment.

How I fixed the low volume in Windows 11

How to fix low audio volume on Windows 11 devices fix-low-audio-volume-windows-11.png

    1. Left-click on the Volume-icon displayed on the Windows taskbar.
    2. Activate "Select a sound output".
    3. Click on "Move volume settings". This opens the Audio settings.
    4. Scroll down to the Advanced section and select "All audio devices".
    5. Select the audio device under Output that you use to play audio on the Windows 11 PC.
    6. Turn the feature Audio Enhancements to Off on the page.

This fixed the issue immediately on my end. It is probably a good idea to turn the volume down before you make the change, as you may get blasted if you turned everything up to max.

I do not know what caused this. I did not enable the audio enhancements feature manually and did not install a new driver or an update of any kind between the time audio worked normally to when I experienced the issue for the first time.

Still, if you experience a low audio volume on Windows 11, preferably without you having made any changes, there is a good chance that the above fix may resolve the issue on your end as well.

What about you? Have you ever had issues with audio playback on Windows devices? Did you manage to fix these?

Low Audio Volume when listening songs

    Hi,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I appreciate the efforts taken by you in resolving this issue. Thank you for providing the detailed information. I understand that you get low audio level while playing songs.

Ideally, the level of audio depends on the type of the audio file that you are playing. However, I would suggest you to try using the Audio Enhancements, which will boost the audio level and help you get a better audio experience. Refer the steps mentioned
    below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + R, to open
      Run dialog box.
    2. Type mmsys.cpl and click on
      OK
      .
    3. Under Playback tab, double click on the sound device that you are using.
    4. Click on Enhancements tab.
    5. Select the checkbox for Loudness Equalization.
    6. Click on OK.

If the issue persists, you may want to try updating the Audio drivers and check. Refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Press Windows Logo key + X, and select
      Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, Video, and Game Controllers.
    3. Right click on the Audio
      device
      and select Update Driver.

You may also want to check the Audio levels for specific applications in the Volume Mixer. Refer the steps mentioned below:

    1. Right click on the Sound icon on the
      Taskbar.
    2. Select Open Volume Mixer.
    3. Now, adjust the Volume levels for the Applications as per your requirement.

  3. audio output low on airpods 3 after windows 11 update. how to fix?

    Dear Windows Support Team,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to seek further assistance regarding a persistent audio issue I've been experiencing with my AirPods Gen 3 since updating my laptop to Windows 11.

Despite exhaustive troubleshooting efforts, including running the audio troubleshooter, disconnecting and reconnecting the AirPods, restarting both my laptop and the AirPods themselves, and verifying the functionality of the AirPods on other devices (both Samsung and Apple phones), the problem persists.

To provide more context, the low audio output issue seems to be exclusive to my AirPods when connected to my Windows 11 laptop. Other Bluetooth devices function normally with adequate volume levels. This suggests that the issue lies specifically with the compatibility between my AirPods and the Windows 11 operating system.

I have tried various solutions suggested online, including the following:

    Method 1: Check Audio Enhancements

    1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    2. Type mmsys.cpl and click OK.
    3. Under the Playback tab, double-click on the sound device you are using.
    4. Click on the enhancements tab.
    5. Toggle the checkbox for Loudness Equalization.
    6. Click OK.
Additionally, I have checked individual app volume levels using the "OpenVolumeMixer" option from the speaker icon on the Taskbar, ensuring that the volume sliders are all the way up for the apps in use.

However, none of these measures have yielded a resolution to the problem.

Given the unique nature of this issue and the extensive troubleshooting already undertaken, I am reaching out to your team for further guidance and support in resolving this matter. Any additional insights or troubleshooting steps you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

For reference, I have an HP Elitebook x360 1030 and applied Airpods Gen3, the AirPods were giving perfectly fine audio output before the update.

Thank you for your attention to this issue, and I look forward to your prompt assistance in finding a solution.

Audio volume keeps forcing to zero.

Tried your suggestion. Troubleshooter tells to increase volume in mixer, which I did. Volume quickly goes back to zero, as before. Troubleshooter says :unable to fix all of the issues found.
