Windows 10: how to fix problem of applications, icons, popups, not showing text.

Text appears partially or not at all on icons. File explorer is near useless, no names or paths display. Task manager shows nothing. Floating text on taskbar items doesn't show up. But start menu text looks fine. Web browser Chrome is completely workable.

System is a Toshiba Satellite C55-C with 8 GB of RAM. Lots of available disk space according to my settings, about 2/3 of a 1 TB drive.


I have cumulative updates installed for Win 10 version 1903, as of 14 January. System started misbehaving on the 17th. I have seen some of this stuff before, usually rebooting and waiting for system to "settle" after logging in will take care of it.

Store not showing images and text

Hi Daniel,

Damaged system files and language compatibility are one of the reasons why the images and texts on the Windows Store apps are not showing. We suggest following the steps below to run Windows Store Apps troubleshooter:

• Open Control Panel.
• Click on System and Security.
• Under Security and Maintenance, click on Troubleshoot common computer problems.
• Under Find and fix other problems, click on Windows Store Apps and click on the
  Run the troubleshooter button.

Missing Date and Time, volume and Battery Icons

Hi,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if this helps:

• Right click on the task bar and you will get a popup menu.
• Click on properties.
• Under behavior of system icons select ON for volume icon, Date and Time icon and Battery icon to always show.
• Click OK.

Use the "show text suggestions as I type" feature without using the mouse

I just discovered the "Show text suggestions as I type" feature in Windows 10. I enabled it in the Settings application (via Devices\Typing, Hardware, Show text suggestions as I type).

I like the feature. I have discovered one small problem with it.

When you start typing a word, the list of suggestions are displayed as follows.





The above image shows the Notepad window containing the text "Hel" and the suggestions list containing the following three items.

• Hello
  
• Hell
  
• Help
  

The problem is that so far I have only been able to find one method of selecting an item in the suggestions list, to use the mouse. I would prefer to be able to make my selection using the keyboard.
