I had turned on my PC and all of the front facing ports no longer recognise any devices. I have tried plugging other devices in both the front and back of the PC yet it still does not work recognise any of the devices. There was an update recently however I reverted and it was still happening.I have tried to update each USB device with no luck, complete uninstall of the drivers and instalation and no luck and I have tested the devices on other PCs and they all still work.I have Windows 11 running and all is up to date at the moment. If there is any other information required or needed please do

    USB ports

    Hi Frank,

Inserting and removing a USB device repeatedly may cause the USB port to stop responding. When the port is in this state, it no longer recognizes any USB device, and the USB device will not work.

Here are few things that you can do to resolve the issue:

Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes. After your computer scans for hardware changes, it might recognize the USB device that is connected to the USB port so that you can use the device.

To scan for hardware changes, follow these steps:

    • Click Start, and then click Run.

Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
    • Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
    • In Device Manager, click your computer so that it is highlighted.
    • Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
    • Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

Turn off Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

    • In the Device Manager dialog box, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties.
    • In the USB Root Hub Properties dialog box, click the Power Management tab. Uncheck the
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
      box.

Let us know how it goes after performing the suggested troubleshooting steps.

  3. USB port not recognising devices

    Hi AmyK_369,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community.

Try and see if the power setting on the Device Manager has been enabled.

    • Hold down Windows + X and open Device Manager > Click the View menu > Select the Show hidden devices option on the menu > Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers > Right-click a USB Root Hub and select Properties
    • Select the Power Management tab > Uncheck the Allow this computer to turn off this device to save power checkbox to deselect that option > Click OK.
    • Repeat the steps above to all USB Root Hubs listed in Device Manager and see if the problem is resolved.
Feel free to keep me informed.

    Best regards

    USB output

    Average Power Output
The average power of a USB port is about 5 volts. Your USB device will be able to draw out a maximum of 500 milliamperes (mA), but most default to 100 mA until prompted to provide more power by the device software. If your device requires more power than
500 mA, it may work slower or not at all while plugged into your computer.

What are you trying to power?

Have you tried a different USB cable?
