Windows 10: How to force dwm.exe to use the discrete graphic card?

Hi there,


I'm using Lenovo XiaoXin Air 13 Pro which has a discrete graphic card NVIDIA GeForce 940MX with high performance and a integrated Intel HD Graphics 520.


I always open lots of windows and create many virtual desktops to boost my efficiency, but when I use Win+Tab to switch between windows, it will delay for seconds to load the view. I look at the task manager and found that my GPU goes crazy.








This is what happens after I press Win+Tab. The dwm.exe uses 90% integrated GPU and the discrete graphic card is "having fun". That's the reason for the delay.


In the control panel, you can see that only dwm.exe does not support high performance GPU but any other program works.






The "Select the preferred balabala" is gray for dwm.exe.


All the drivers have been updated to the latest version. How to force dwm.exe to use the discrete graphic card?


FYI: There are other people who have the same issue on other computers and it seems that NVIDIA cannot help. See links below

How to force Edge use discrete graphics?

Hi,

You may try the following steps and check if the issue persist.

• Right clicking on the Desktop and selecting NVIDIA Control Panel
• Navigating to the Control Panel and searching for NVIDIA Control Panel

If you don't have it installed, make sure you have the latest NVIDIA drivers.

Under the NVIDIA Control Panel, navigate to 3D Settings -> Manage 3D Settings. Select the
Global Settings tab and use the Preferred graphics processor drop-down to select
High-performance NVIDIA processor. Then hit the Apply button. You may need to restart your computer.

Hi,

Your computer makes a noise or beeps from your internal speaker because it failed to detect the graphics card. What we can suggest is for you to try cleaning your graphics card with a pencil eraser. Here are the steps below:

• Turn your computer off.
• Pull out your video/graphics card.
• Rubbed the cold contacts with soft pencil eraser.
• Connect your video/graphics card back to the computer.

Kindly note that this is just a temporary fix. If the case still continues, I suggest that you contact your graphics card's manufacturer.
