How to Force Windows Update Rollback?

I've been on this problem for hours looking here and using search engines and I'm stuck. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, an automatic update was attempted while I was out. I came home to find it stuck at 98%. I've had this problem in the past and it can never complete, but usually it gets stuck at around 75%. I end up having to do a hard reset and it has always rolled back with no problems. This time, I get stuck with the spinning circle. The timing was unfortunate because I had set aside the time TODAY to back up and transfer everything to my new computer. Last night's surprise really sucked.

I've tried Startup Repair, I think it completed the first time, but nothing changed. Now it says it can't repair.

I tried uninstalling Quality Updates, it completed successfully but no change.

I tried uninstalling Feature Updates, it says it ran into a problem and can't.

I've tried System Restore, but I get a message there are no restore points.

*I've tried restarting/booting into Safe Mode, but I get a message that Windows can't complete updates while in Safe Mode. I think this is key info, I can't seem to bypass it trying to complete the installation and it's not recognizing it needs to roll back. If I can at least get Safe Mode to work, I think I'll be able to retrieve the files I need.

I've been able to access the command prompt and created a USB boot drive in case I need to reinstall windows, but I would like to avoid the timely process of trying to back up a bunch of stuff via command prompt.

Fortunately, most of my stuff is backed up, but there's still quite a bit of recent work that isn't. My email archives in Thunderbird are dated and the process might be a problem.

Does anyone know how I can stop windows from trying to complete the upgrade so I can get back into Windows? I would be in your debt for your help.

    Windows 10 forced download

^This, then reboot and go to manually update windows. Find KB3035583 in the list of available updates, right-click and "Hide this update" so it doesn't get installed again next go around.

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond How to Force Windows Update Rollback? :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.

    Windows 10 forced download

To stop the download, uninstall the KB3035583 update (under "Control Panel > Windows Update > Installed Updates").

To get rid of the C:\$Windows.~BT folder:
    • Right-click on your C: drive.
    • Select "Properties".
    • Click on [ Disk Cleanup ]
    • After the initial scan: If you have a [ Clean up system files ] button, click it and wait for the second scan to finish.
    • Scroll down the list and look for "Temporary Windows installation files" (its size should be in the gigabytes range); check the box.
    • Click on [ OK ] to start the clean-up.
