Unable to access 'Quarantine' or 'Scans' folder in Windows Defender Folder

Hi all, I had Windows Defender pick up a Trojan from a file I downloaded, which I quarantined. However Defender now tells me 'Remediation Incomplete'

    "Detected: Trojan:Script/Wacatac.H!ml

    Status: Failed

This threat or app might not be completely remediated."

There are no further actions or options available - last time this happened I had the option to delete the file direct from the Windows Security window.

I assume this means it was not able to successfully quarantine or delete the file but the file has been removed from my Downloads folder and doesn't show up in any explorer search of either Downloads folder of the whole C drive.

I wanted to check my Quarantine and Scans folders as per instructions on other similar threads to see if it's in there and needs a manual delete.

When I go into C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender and click Quarantine or Scans folders I get the following error:

    - "You don't currently have permission to access this folder"

    - "Click Continue to permanently get access to the folder"

    - I click Continue and get the same message about permission, but also:

    - "To gain access to this folder you will need to use the 'security tab' (which is blue link)

    - I click on this and enter a window labelled "Permission Entry for Quarantine"

In this window I'm unable to make any changes.

As far as I can tell I already have full access permissions as I am the administrator and the only user on this machine.

Primary Question - Why can't I access these folders?

Secondary question - Do I need to take further action? Am I still at risk from that Trojan? Defender offers me no further actions I can take. I believe quarantine files autodelete after a certain amount of time anyway.

How do I delete items quarantined by Windows Defender?

    Hi A S Hamid,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

Open File Explorer, then on the View menu at the top, temporarily turn on 'Hidden Items'.

Go to this folder and delete the contents of the quarantine folder:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Quarantine

Go to this folder and delete the contents of the Service folder.

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans\History\Service

That's it, that will remove the quarantined items and their entry from the list in Defender.

How to get permission to open scans and quarantine folder in Microsoft defender

Windows Defender repeated threat warnings despite repeated scans

    Sorry, I was offline.

Boot your PC into Safe Mode.

Open File Explorer, then on the View menu at the top, temporarily turn on 'Hidden Items'.

Navigate to this folder: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Scans\History\Service

Delete the contents of that Service folder.

    Navigate to this folder:

    C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Quarantine

Delete the contents of that Quarantine folder.

    Close File Explorer.

Open Defender and select the option to perform an offline scan, your PC will restart to perform that scan.

Then check if that malware list is clear.
