  1. How to increase buffer cache use to improve file I/O performance ?

I am using a video editor to detect scenes on large video files, around 6GB to 8GB each. It takes hours to process one of those files, and according to task manager, the process is disk bound.

My PC has 32GB memory, of which only 4GB appear to be in use. CPU usage is around 10-15%. Disk I/O 100%. In my opinion, scene detection should be a CPU-intensive process.

Of course, you might say that the program should detect availability of memory and access the file more intelligently. But is there a system tweak I can use, for example to greatly increase the amount of read-ahead when Windows detects serial reads (I assume that the video files are mostly accessed with serial reads)? Or can I pre-load a file into the buffer cache, if that is the right term in the Windows world?

    :)

  2. Will adding a buffer to video recording improve performance

I'm using WinTV 7 tv tuner on a computer hauppage 1250 on my desktop hp integrated graphics.

While recording if I set the program to have a buffer will it improve video performance?

I think it will work one of two ways.
1 - the buffer will record to hard drive while the show is being recorded actually dropping performance
2 - the buffer will provide times when dropped frames occur thus improving recorded video

I only notice video jerkiness a couple of times every 4 or 5 minutes or so, not very often.

Should I leave the buffer off? or set it for a couple of minutes?

    Local Video Files buffering

    Hi Larry,

You might experience some buffers in playing videos from your hard drive due to a corrupted file, a software conflict, or an incompatible graphics driver. For us to identify the root cause of this issue, kindly answer the questions below:

    • What application are you using to play or open your video files?
    • Have you made any software or hardware changes prior to this issue?
    • What is the build number and version of your Windows?
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you use System File Checker to scan for corrupted system files.

We will wait for your response.
