Windows 10: How to Install AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4200 drivers on W7 to Upgrade?

So, I don't have W10 yet and I can't upgrade to it because I just diagnosed the problem. Unfortunately there is no OFFICIAL compatibility for the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series (which sucks). However, there are workarounds which I found esp here ATI Radeon HD 4200 driver for 64-bit Windows 10? - Windows 10 Forums.

But in the link, the person already had W10. But I can't upgrade. Where can i find the W10-supporting driver for my series or at least a workaround for W7? I found something about Device Manager but I tried that and it didn't work!

Upgraded from Win 7 to 10 now everything is stretched wide..

On the AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series

I have driver 15.2000.1062.1004 Installed 3/08/2015

On ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series it says the same driver as above But also says No Driver installed

 

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. driver update for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series - Error 0x800f0203

This update has been trying (and failing) to install daily for over a month now. the additional information says:

"Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. driver update for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series

"This driver was provided by Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. for support of ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series"

According to the AMD web site, they no longer support this video. It says that the driver for this device has been provided as a courtesy to Microsoft, and that you should use Windows Update to install the driver. To quote the AMD website:

ATI Radeon™ HD 4000/ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4000, ATI Radeon™ HD 3000/ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3000, and ATI Radeon™ HD 2000/ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 2000 Series Graphics reached peak performance optimization in October, 2013.

No additional driver releases are planned for these products.

The last operating system supported using the AMD drivers was Microsoft Windows® 8 with the AMD Catalyst 13.1 driver package, which can be downloaded from the AMD Driver page :

Driver support for these products under Windows® 8.1 and Windows® 10 is only available via Windows Update. Please enable Windows Update to allow it to automatically detect and install display driver version 8.970.100.9001"

According to Device Manager, this is the driver version that is already installed on my system. Any suggestions about how to resolve this issue will be greatly appreciated.

 

There is no W10 supporting driver from AMD for their HD4x series as they dropped current driver support for that series years ago. But, you should be able to install their Legacy drivers in Win7.

However, that won't do you any good as there are no Win10 drivers for that product, and in cases like those, you either use a Win8.1 driver or you get stuck with the MS Basic Display Adapter driver.

The solution (which worked for me) in Win8.1 was to use Device Manager -- > Driver Update and select the .inf file for the driver package, NOT using the standard AMD driver installer.
