Windows 10: How to Install Old Epson Perfection 1200 Scanner in Windows 10

I've been experimenting with Windows 10 using a VM (VirtualBox) before upgrading. One challenge has been to see if I could get my old 1999 Epson Perfection 1200 scanner working in Windows 10 since Epson do not provide any 64 bit drivers.


I discovered you can use the Epson 64 bit drivers for the Perfection 2400 and they work fine with the Perfection 1200. The Epson Scan program is fully functional for normal reflective scans and film scanning (if you have the attachment). The built in Windows scan program also works. This fix also works in Windows 8.


Here is how to do it:

• Download and install the Perfection 2400U drivers from Epson USA, version 3.04A http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/s...rm=OSF_W_10-64
• Connect and turn on your scanner
• Run Device Manager
• The Perfection 1200U will be shown under under Other Devices
• Select Update Driver
• Choose 'Browse my computer for driver software"
• Choose 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer'
• UNCHECK the 'Show compatible hardware'
• Click on 'Epson' in the Manufacturer box, and the scroll down through model until you find "Epson Perfection 2400', and choose that, and press Next
• Ignore the 'Update Driver warning - choose 'Yes'; to continue to install.
• The Perfection 2400 will now be shown in Device Manager. Note that the Perfection 1200 will still be shown under Devices & Printers
• Run Epson Scan and test the scanner. You may need to log out and log in again for program to work

epson 2400 photo wont work with win10

Follow the instructions on the second last post in this thread (Geoff Wiggins) except substitute Epson 2400 in place of Perfection 1200 when manually updating the driver.

*Note that Epson Scan will not run unless the scanner is turned on first.

 

Is Epson V600 scanner compatiable with Windows 10

Many thanks to Steve C for his suggestion. This worked perfectly for me, so now I don't have to keep Windows 7 on my old laptop.

 

Pleased to be of help. I also noticed there is a Scan App in Windows 8 & Windows 10 which works with the Perfection 1200 and is OK for basic scanning.

No problem. It's a pity Epson can't support their legacy products when the scanner still works perfectly well in Windows 10 once you find the correct driver.

 

Thanks a bunch! Works for me too. The procedure was a little different though, maybe due to that November update?
I didn't have a "Show compatible hardware" checkbox to uncheck, but found Epson, and then "Epson Perfection 2400' under Imaging devices.

That's strange. I have the latest update and I do see the "Show compatible hardware" check box.

I'm running Windows 10 Home latest build and navigate as follows:

Device Manager (as Admin.) / Properties / Driver / Update Driver / Browse my computer..../ Let me pick from a list .....

You should then see the driver selection list with the check box option.

 

Just checked again, no checkbox. Different version in the UK?

Thanks for the info - This also works with my Win 7, 64 bit system.
Photos are a zip, but when I attempt to scan a negative, the lid light switches off and I wind up with a lovely scan of the underside of the lid.
Perhaps I missed a key step?
Any suggestions?

not wishing to Hijack the thread - but if you don't mind paying and have an old legacy scanner then VUESCAN seems to work for loads and loads of older scanners including those nice canon LIDE film (negative) scanners.

Of course another solution if the OP's excellent suggestion doesn't work is to use a VM --easier than dual booting of course.

For those not familar with a VM -- install say VBOX or VMWARE PLAYER (both free) and on this install the legacy OS. Once the legacy OS is powered up - runs concurrently with your Host (W10) install old driver and away you go --plenty of documentation on VM's in the Virtualisation section of the Forum. You can also create a VM from a physical OS as well. Saves re-installing drivers etc.

Did you select in the driver (Advanced Mode) to use the TPU to scan a negative/transparency?

 

Followed Steve C's instructions and the scanner works fine, but when I am finished scanning and exit the scanner, the scanner displays remain on the desktop and process continues to be listed in the Task Manager. I have to use Task Manager to stop the process before the scanner screens and process disappear. So it works, but does not exit properly.

 

Try changing the properties of the scan software to 'Run as Administrator'. This cures a lot of programs that don't exit gracefully on newer versions of Windows that they weren't written for, especially when Compatibility Mode doesn't have any effect.
