Windows 10: How to install Windows 10 on Hyper-V VM?

If there is a tutorial already, I cannot find it here as most of the hyper-V references are about getting Hyper-V working.

I have:
- Physical Notebook running Windows 10 Home (with key of course)
- Physical Notebook running Window 10 Edu (with key of course)
- Hyper-V installed on the Windows 10 Edu
- USB for Windows 10 Pro (with key of course)
- USB for Windows 10 Edu (iwth key of course)
- ISO for Windows 10 Pro
- Backups and Repair discs on DVD for the notebooks

I don't have:
- a Win 10 Home ISO from the OEM because it's a hidden partition. Thus, I have the above (useless) Win 10 USB (Home version)

I want:
to move my Windows 10 Home to a VM on the Windows 10 Edu PC so I can trash (er, recycle) the old notebook.

I cannot seem to get the install working for various reasons:
- The VM does not seem to support accessing the USB drives!?
- The Recovery Disk formats the virtual hard drive, but does not offer an option for actually installing Windows
- The Repair disc from the backup is not bootable
- I considered purchasing some third party application but would like to know they are worth the money. Turns out Acronis trials do not support recovering / installing windows.
- Procedures I have found on other sites suggest making the USB work by taking it offline, but that is not an offered option on my disk management utility
- Cannot find where to buy a Win 10 DVD (only USBs)
- etc etc epic fails

Before I try another random solution such as abandoning Hyper-V for Oracle's VitualBox, can someone help out? Thank you!

Windows 10 and Hyper-V

I notice that windows 10 has Hyper-V. If I installed stand alone Hyper-V on a server and wish to manage it with my windows 10 notebook......... which version of Hyper-V stand alone does the server need to be running?

I think I have hyper-v 2012 R2.

 

You want to convert the Home PC to a VM or just move the license? In either case you'll need a transferable license. If it is OEM most likely will not work.

The simplest would be to download a Windows 10 ISO from Tech Bench and just install it in VM using the ISO file (not a USB) as the installation media. The ISO contains both home and pro and you'll be prompted which you want to use when you install. You can activate it with your 10 Home key.

If you want to convert the home PC to a VM (keeping all software and so on) you can use Disk2vhd. You can then connect this VHD to a new VM and start it up. Most likely that will work (if not you may have to sysprep it first). It will install the drivers it needs when it starts. As the hardware will have changed you'll need to activate it with your home key.

 

I tried to do exactly that. I'll retry and log the problems that I encountered. Better still, I will try Disk2VHD and see how that goes.

 

The easiest and fastest method would be to create a VHD file of your Windows 10 Home PC, and use it to set up a Hyper-V virtual machine.

Notice that if your Windows 10 Home is an OEM version, it might not activate when the vhd created with Disk2VHD is set up in Hyper-V. In that case you need to purchase a Windows 10 license to activate it.

 

An alternate method for virtual is using VMware Player. A long time ago I had made this set of tutorials which is still representing the actual situation.

OK, I got the install running, but I am having a problem as the VM is running dog slow. For example, Task Manager (Not Responding)

Clarification: getting tasks to start is dog slow, even getting keys typed in is slow, but when something responds, like Cortana, the window paints fast and animates properly.




UPDATE: Suspicious of some problem with connecting to the internet, when Coranta came alive, it complained.

NOTE: Entering characters from the keyboard is nightmarishly unresponsive.

OK, finally got access to the event viewer, but COPY button does not seem to work.
