    How to make a file run its intended default version?


    I am trying open an app that was supposed to run on Java. I had forgot to install java and had made the default start up my browser. My main solution is to find what it actually uses but I can't. So now I'm hoping that if I somehow reset it, the file will become its java version. I did that and it didn't work. Please help! I have probably tried everything. I will reply to those I have not tried yet though.

    Lost default photo viewer after profile rebuild

    Thanks Brink. I've tried those steps before i started searching Google. After the profile rebuild i don't have the Photo app listed to choose to make it default in either the system settings for default apps or the Open With option.

    I can't even find it doing a search. Seems to have been removed somehow with the profile rebuild, which doesn't make sense.

    Might be helpful to list what i've done How to make a file run its intended default version? :) I've done the open with check, the choose default program in the system menu, tried that in device manager default programs also. I've checked the programs and features Turn windows features on/off and it's not listed there (never thought it was but that was a suggestion), searched the MS Store, it's not listed there either.

    I don't like playing in the registry unless i have defined steps and haven't found anything for this yet, just the Win7 version like in my OP.

    Hi,

    I believe the file association might be corrupt. I would suggest you to check if the reader app is set as the default app to handle PDF files. Open control panel and then click on the item 'Default programs' and then click on 'Set default programs'. Click
    on the reader app in the listed programs and click on the option 'Set this program as default' to set the program as default application for PDF files. Try these steps and let us know the results.

    reset system folder (windows) permission back to default / original state

    Hi,

    Welcome to Microsoft community.

    I would suggest you to try the following steps:

    • Click "Search" and type File explorer options,Select it from the options
    • Click on Restore defaults.
    • Click Apply and OK.
