Windows 10: How to make outlook a primary account and remove hotmail alias?

This question is not how to set a primary address in the outlook app. I have an old Hotmail account and a newer Outlook account alias with a different name. When I go to my Microsoft accounts page, go to "your info" and select "edit account info" a page comes up with the title "Manage how you sign in to Microsoft". It gives me a list of Account Aliases and if I hit "Make Primary" on the outlook address, it says We were unable to make *** Email address is removed for privacy *** your primary alias. Please try again later. I've tried many, many times and it doesn't work.

Unable to change primary alias - Microsoft Account

I would like to provide you with the information that
an account alias is an email address or phone number that you use to sign in to your Microsoft account. You can have multiple aliases, and use any of them with Microsoft services such as Outlook.com, Skype, OneDrive,
Office, Xbox, Windows and more.

Your primary alias appears on devices such as your Xbox, Surface, and Windows Phone, and is the email OneDrive sends from when you share. You can choose a different alias to be the primary one at any time.

An alias is also the best way to change your email, but keep all your mail.
Add an alias, then make the new alias primary. Then you can
keep or remove the original alias.

I would suggest you to try the following steps and check if that helps.

• Sign in to the
  Microsoft account website.
• Under Account aliases, click/tap on the Make primary link to the right of an
  
  added email alias you want to be your primary alias.

Note: The email alias at the top of the list without a Make primary link is your current primary alias.

• Uncheck the Send me promotional offers from Microsoft box if you like, and click/tap on Yes to confirm.

You may also try the following steps given below and check if that helps.

• Navigate to Start>Settings>Account>Your Account.
• In the right pane, click on Sign in with a local account instead.
• Provide your current Microsoft Account Password.
• Follow the on-screen instructions.
• You can leave the Enter Password option empty, however, it is highly recommended to keep a password on your system to keep it safe.

Primary Alias Renaming and Windows Phone

Thank you for posting regarding the issue you are having with your Outlook.com alias.



I did some research on this issue, and from what I found I do believe that the phone itself has to be set up with the primary email address for the account. You would receive emails sent to the other alias, but sent emails will only show up with the primary
one. I got this information from the Outlook Blog:

• There is a limit of five aliases per account, per year.
• You can send email from an alias in the Outlook.com web interface. However, you won't be able to send email from an alias from your phone or other client. Instead, email you send from your phone or other client will still be sent from the primary address
  of your account. This is a limitation we're working hard to remove, so stay tuned.
  
• You cannot sign in to your account with the alias. You should continue to use your primary account name to sign in
  

If you changed the primary alias, you do have to reset the phone and set it up with the new one, otherwise the phone doesn't really know what's happening with the account.

hotmail is now outlook

Hotmail users can now upgrade to outlook layout.It looks like windows 8 menus. It's very fast now using outlook over the previous layout.

you can upgrade from within and create new alias's too.
