    How to Partition

I did once manage to Partition in to 2 separate drives the Disk 2 - New Volume (GHow to Partition :) external drive

However I can not repeat that and instead I keep getting it split in to 3 partitions?

    I only want 2 partitions 1 x 1TB + 1 x 2 TB

I am doing this on this system (Windows 10, 32 bit) Home edition, because my ACRONIS Total Image 2016 won't recognise a 3 TB drive.

BTW: I have two other registered Windows systems 1. Windows 10 Prof. & 2. Windows 7 Prof. both using 64 bit, that I don't have problems with.

    Please see attched .jpeg image

    Thanks

    :)

I tried your Method 1 to fix it which said changes have been made to my computer & to try & update again which failed.. again & the same message above came up again. My laptop is secure as I run Norton 360, so what should I do next to try & fix this problem?
My laptop is a Toshiba satellite L650.

  4. How to Partition

Hello Composer Welcome to the Ten Forums!

First off I don't think you were successful in seeing the image you want to show attached. You will need to try attaching it again or click on the "Insert Image" option seen on the reply box's menu bar right in between the "Insert Video" to the right and the Unlink button with the red X in the center. Then you simply browse the drive to where you save the image.

As far as Acronis that would be the Acronis True Image Home edition if correct. And as far splitting up a larger 3tb drive that is still a necessity at this time even for 10. Windows simply can't go over 2,2tb approximate for the present time with the MBR type volume that is. You will want to see the largest created set for GPT instead! Have a look at some information posted in an older MS TechNet blog about just this type of situation which automatically rules out the use of the DiskPart tool become someone suggests using that! Installing Windows on disks larger than 2TB

Now the post there advises using the 8.1 media to partition while you have 10 media newer instead to work with and can boot live from in order to first hit the "Install Now" button and second after checking the agreement box and arriving at the "Upgrade or Custom" install screen hit the Custom option and then select "Drive tools" found at the bottom there. That will open up the Windows disk partitioning options!

If nothing important is on the 3tb drive at the moment as far as the two partitions are concerned you would simply nuke the second partition all together when selecting that with the delete option and then select "New" opting for GPT not MBR when going to create the new larger partition. A 2tb drive comes down to 1.839gb approximate indicating you won't be seeing 3tb in actuality but will likely see that 1.8+gb larger GPT partition.

    Thanks,

Please see attached Image this time! (Thanks for the instructions)

I am trying to understand what you advise, but it is a little over my head?

I want a 1 TB & a 2TB Partitions! (Or as close as I can get!) within the permitted limits.

Can you please give me instructions step by step like ' How to Partition for Dummies? '

    Thank you

If the disk is MBR there is a 2TB size limit and the disk will need to be converted to GPT in order to use the 3TB.

Right-click on the disk and select Convert to GPT Disk (see screenshot below).

  7. The G volume on the larger drive looks normal. So you have the nearly 2tb size partition at the front of the drive. If you didn't intend to have the larger ahead of the smaller 1tb partition and nothing is on the G drive at present you could actually wipe that drive clean to start over without losing anything.

Once you have either a separate updated program like Partition Wizard or the Paragon Partition Manager 14 Free Edition for example to work in Windows from the other OS drive as another Windows option you would snuff out the other two parts seen on that drive unless wanting the larger partition at the back for things like storage/back up purposes while the 1tb would be open in the front for any planned dual boot of OSs.

The approximate total with the drive cleaned off completely would be about 2.76tb you would then split up seeing a 920gb up front being about the available space seen with any 1tb drive and then the remaining 1.8+tb left over for a single larger storage/backup partition. With partitioning wares you can set the desize for the first partition and see that created and formatted to be ready for use and then simply use the same procedure to see the second created to fill in the remaining space by verifying the increase in size when selecting how much drive space will be used before clicking any apply or proceed button. Once done a few times that will become second nature!

Besides the While in Windows or booting live from the 10 media there are other options as far as live tools are concerned. One would be the live Gnome Partition Editor tool or GParted option either downloaded and burned to a cd-r or written to a small 1gb flash drive or booting live from any Linux distro burned to disk or seen on a live stick for using the GParted option there as long as the distro is the full and not simply live only but sees the install option.

Once booted live the partitioning tool there sees a click to drag slider type option to drag from 0 point to the right and stop where the first ends and applied after selecting NTFS File System option and watch as the first is created and formatted. You repeat the process only drag the slider all the way to the far end of the drive to insure the second will fill the remainder of the drive and click apply once again following the NFTS selection to watch. You then have the two partitions created and formatted. Use GParted to Create, Delete, Copy or Resize Partitions

Since the DiskPart tool is out due to that being a drive over 2tb in size the manual method by command prompt option is out entirely plus the GUI method is the best recommend for anyone new at partitioning since with each program the steps are simplified when following the help files or guide seen for each. With either of these methods and since you are not going to be creating more then four total partitions you would still be able to create MBR type primary partitions. If going over the 2tb mark on say a larger 4tb or even the new 5tb drives then you would look at the GPT option when creating a new one.

    How to Partition

I also have another couple of questions?

If I am not to Post them here I apologise!

    1. Administrator problems?

It said " Welcome Administrator " but then stops me allocating certain files / saving them where I want when download them, e.g. a .pdf & a .Jpeg image?

I am the sole user so can I make myself sole administrator?

    If so, How?

    2. Still Acronis isn't saving to the smaller of the 2 partitions?

I have a spare 750GB external drive and it saved it to that earlier today?

    Thanks

  9. The two small parts on the G drive are unusable since those are shown as unallocated drive space. I wouldn't be planning to put anything there at the moment including scheduling any backups before the drive is all set to go. Your first task now is to see the drive partitioned the way you are going to want it.

As for the downloads as well as copy and paste of files and folders you are running into the obvious problem of not having the correct place to put things. Plus you have to weigh things in like the UAC(User Account Control) as well as the Windows Firewall if that is turned on which is by default. The UAC will prompt on just about anything and why that gets turned off first here! The Firewall is switched off automatically with the av/internet security software in use here seeing that taken care of.

As far as how good Acronis is as far as softwares go it has one of top reputations. But your present drive situation needs fixing before you can actually anything more with that one. Once the G 3tb drive is tended to you can even store full system image back ups with that amount of drive space available. I work with a pair of 2tb drives in now since another pair of smaller 1tb drives were gettting a little worn out.
