    Yes, to stop Windows Update you turn off the service as stated above.

    Problem is, there is a scheduled task to restart it again!

    That is why you have to disable the scheduled task first, THEN you can disable the Windows Update service, confident that it won't be restarted again...

    See my post above.

    PS don't forget to go to Control Panel / Programs and Features and uninstall 'Windows Update Helper' if you have it installed. That does exactly what it says on the tin, 'helps' you to get updates...

    Not sure it is a good idea, but it's your machine and you ask.........................
    Go to Run > type services.msc > OK > scroll down to Windows Update > right click at it > click Properties > under Startup type, click the pointer and select Disable > OK
