How to prevent Defrag from re-enabling itself

I normally keep defrag/optimization set on a schedule for my internal hard drives - one SSD, one standard. I have the other drives disabled under 'choose drives' and I've also disabled 'defrag new drives automatically'.

However, a few times a year I'll see my other drives having lots of activity, and check just to find out that everything that was unchecked is now checked, it is defragging all drives as well as new ones.

I have a multi-drive storage device (Drobo) that handles all this itself, and the 'file system' it reports to Windows is basically virtual, and doesn't represent the actual layout of data on the drives. Defrag is known to cause issues on Drobo devices, and they warn against running defrag. So far I haven't seen it cause any issues, but this is 27TB of my data that I have in a Drobo specifically for redundancy (one drive can die without losing anything).

I can't figure out what turns it back on, but that's very invasive and possibly destructive. Any idea why Windows does this, or if something else could be doing it, such as Dell or ESET antivirus software (the only thing I really have installed that is related to the system as a whole and does any drive scanning/checking)?

    :)

  2. Windows Defrag

When running defrag, there is a drive listing for Windows RE Tools. It shows as a solid state drive and that it has never been defragged. It will not optimize. Clicking on it does nothing. Any suggestions?

  4. How to prevent Defrag from re-enabling itself

    defrag

    Hi Kim,

It is important to use an administrator account because standard account holders
cannot defrag the hard disk drive. We would like to ask for additional information. Please provide the following:

    • Which build of Windows 10 are you using? To know about it, hit
Start, type Winver and then press
Enter. You could also press Windows Key + R, type
      Winver into the
      Run dialog and press Enter.
    • Are you using the administrator account on your computer or a Microsoft/guest account?
    • Were there any changes made on your computer prior to the issue?
    • Since you've mentioned that it refuses to defrag, can you please provide us with a screenshot of it? You may refer to this

      link
on how to include a screenshot in your post.

Moreover, we recommend that you use the administrator account registered on your computer the defrag it. To optimize them:

    • Select the search bar on the taskbar and enter defrag.

    • Select Defragment and Optimize Drives.

    • Select the Optimize button.

Looking forward to the requested information and the results of the recommended troubleshooting steps.
