how to protect outlook data on a windows device thats not enrolled without WIP?

circumvent Windows Information Protection Policies by using WIndows 10 Home

    Hi,

I try to understand the actual use-cases for Windows Information Protection. I assumed that it was intended to provide separation of personal and business data on *personal* devices in BYOD scenarios and allow for removing access to business data in case
a device is disconnected from the MDM solution. However, in most BYOD scenarios (on Windows 10), users will have a Windows 10 HOME edition (NOT pro/enterprise/education) on which WIP is not available? I tried to configure a MAM policy for Windows 10 (“without
enrollment”) following the exact steps in this blog (https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com...tection-explained-windows-10-creators-update/),
but with no success on Windows Home. Is WIP supported on home or not? In this article, it suggest that MAM policies would be supported on Windows home though… (“When users upgrade from MAM to MDM on Windows Home edition, they lose access to WIP. On the Home
edition, we do not recommend pushing MDM policies to enable users to upgrade.”)

If WIP doesn’t work on Windows Home, it becomes actually a bigger issue, since HOME edition simply ignores the WIP policy and will allow users to synchronize data using onedrive or outlook 2016 (cache mode), but will not protect it… There’s even no way to
block access from Windows Home devices, as far as I know. I would assume there would be a compliance policy setting that would allow you to “block any OS version/edition that doesn’t support WIP”? However, you can only block older versions using compliance-policies,
but not e.g. block Win10 home only and allow Win10 pro or Enterprise.

So, did I miss something or did I misunderstand how WIP is working or for which scenarios it is useful? Or will this be solved in the fall update?

    thanks!

    Raf
