Windows 10: How to restore offscreen VLC?

Hi!

I have a projector connected to my pc. I watch movies on it with vlc. When I turn it off, and open vlc, it opens on the turned off projector screen. How do I restore it? Or how do I get vlc not to open on a turned off screen?

If I've understood the problem correctly(?), you might try this:

• Open VLC and select it in the taskbar so it is the currently selected application (even though you can't see it)
• Let go of the mouse and be careful not to move it until step 6
• Use the Alt-Spacebar key combination
• There should be a little pop-up menu which appears. If 'Move' is an option, use the downward cursor/arrow key to select it and press enter. If 'Restore' is an option, select that option with the cursor keys, press Enter and go back to step 3
• Once you've selected Move, be careful to not move the mouse. Instead, hit one of the cursor/arrow keys (left/right/up/down) a couple of times
• *Then* move the mouse. With any luck the VLC window should come into view and you can re-position it.

 

I saw this on another forum. It didn't work for me. I use win10.

 

Hi Alper, welcome to the Ten Forums.

Easiest would of course be to turn the projector on, drag the VLC to your main display then close it and turn the projector off. VLC remembers the display it was closed and opens next time on that display.

Alternatively you can do this. Looks complicated but in fact takes just a second or two:

1.) Run VLC Player, be sure it is the active application, focus on it
2.) Press ALT + SPACE to open the application context menu (it's there even you don't see it because it is shown on ghost display), press R to select Restore on the context menu to switch it to windowed mode instead of full screen. This method cannot move a full screen window. If VLC was already in windowed mode pressing R will simply be ignored, does no harm nor does it change the rest of the instructions:




3.) Again, press ALT + SPACE to open the context menu
4.) Press M to select Move on the context menu:




5.) The Move pointer is shown but again, you just have to take my word for it because the window is not yet shown on your main display and you cannot see it:




5.) Using the arrow keys, move the at this point still invisible VLC window from the ghost projector display towards your main display until part of it comes visible. Now press Enter to release the Mover pointer and drag the application window with mouse where you want it.

You can practice this simply by opening the File Explorer window on your main screen and doing the above to see it first in action.

Of course it works in Windows 10. In fact, I just did it with exactly as in your scenario to get the screenshots to my previous post, in Windows 10 using VLC Player.

I did wonder if the 'Metro'/'Modern' version of VLC player might behave differently ... but I just had a quick look and the same seems to work for that too.

 

Yes. All Windows Store Apps have this same context menu and they can be restored, moved, minimized, maximized and closed using it.

 

Thanks guys for the detailed responses. It still didn't work and I found out why. That menu doesn't open when vlc is skinned.

 

I have had this happen to me.

Alt + Tab until you've got VLC selected.
Try WIN + SHIFT + left (or right) arrow to get it back to the monitor where it's viewable.

 

I'm pretty sure you already fixed the issue to get the off-screen skinned VLC, but I thought I should share anyways. *Tongue

Go into the folder that VLC is downloaded in.
Go into skins folder.
Cut out which ever skin you were using and paste it somewhere else.
Open VLC and it should start out on your default monitor.
