Windows 10: how to restore thumbnails

Until recently, the video files in my x32Win10ProV22H2 used to show thumbnails. I googled for solutions and so tried to empty the icon cache, but was told I could not, because the files were open in some program. However, all the entries in the icon cache had their date/time stamp changed to NOW. It improved the situation somewhat - SOME of the video files and folders now show thumbnails instead of the generic VLC cone. How can I get ALL the video files to once more show thumbnails?

Many thanks for you reply. I have done all the steps you suggested, but no change,

When I open a folder containing photos, some open correctly but the vast majority open with thumbnails, but they very quickly get overwritten and you can not longer see the thumbnails.

Are there any more suggestions?

I was trying to make my computer run faster and a suggestion online said to delete thumbnails. I did and now I want them back!!! Is there a way to restore deleted thumbnails to my computer? I went to the Recycle Bin and restored all, however I still don't
