Hi all,In Windows 10 I could edit a photo using the built-in Windows 10 Photos App. Specifically, I would regularly crop images and sometimes apply a filter etc. I could then save the changes to the image file and the original EXIF metadata such as the geographical information as to where the photo was taken etc would be retained - this was perfect for my requirements as I would then upload this editted image to a website and the EXIF data would be extracted by the website and used to place a "pin" on a map as to where the photo was originally taken and extract and display other informat

How to retain EXIF Data when editing photos in Windows Photos app? (Works fine on Windows 10 but doesn't work on Windows 11?)

    H Bobby,

There is no registry edit o hack to get the Photos app to retain EXIG data on the edited files, if the Legacy photos app also removes the EXIF data, you may need to consider using different Image Editing software.

  3. How to retain EXIF Data when editing photos in Windows Photos app? (Works fine on Windows 10 but doesn't work on Windows 11?)

    Hi all,

In Windows 10 I could edit a photo using the built-in Windows 10 Photos App. Specifically, I would regularly crop images and sometimes apply a filter etc. I could then save the changes to the image file and the original EXIF metadata (such as the geographical information as to where the photo was taken etc) would be retained - this was perfect for my requirements as I would then upload this (editted) image to a website and the EXIF data would be extracted (by the website) and used to place a "pin" on a map as to where the photo was originally taken and extract and display other information such as the camera model etc.

Since upgrading to Windows 11 though, the Windows 11 version of the Microsoft Photos app, when editing a photo and upon saving now seems to strip ALL EXIF metadata from the image and thus, when I upload the photo to a particular website is now unable to record where the photo was taken and with what type of camera etc.

What I wanted to know is, does anyone know a way in which I can explicitly tell the Microsoft Photos app to "keep" the EXIF Metadata when I make changes to an image OR if anyone knows why this is doing this now - eg. is it another Windows setting that I need to re-enable?

I fully understand why Microsoft *might* be removing the EXIF data (as it would be seen as a privacy issue but I would have expected there to be an option in the app to re-enable this) but for my purposes, I really want to retain the EXIF metadata when saving changes to the image.

Any help would be truly appreciated How to retain EXIF Data when editing photos in Windows Photos app? Works fine on Windows 10... :)

    Thanks in advance,

    Bobby

    H Bobby,

I am Dave, I will help you with this.

The new Photos app in Windows 11 does lack many features and has changed a lot of the functionality that existed in the Window 10 version, download the Legacy Photos App from the Microsoft Store, and edit an image file with that to test if that retains the EXIF data in the file.
