    How to reuse win 10 product key from an old computer no longer in use


    I purchased a Surface Pro tablet, serial # 041664762853 a number of years ago and since then it has stopped working. I have removed and destroyed the hard drive and completely recycled the remaining parts of the computer. It is no longer in use... anywhere.


    I did however make note of the Windows 10 Pro product key and would like to upgrade my Windows 7 desktop to Windows 10 Pro and REUSE my product key from my Surface Pro listed above.


    Is it possible to install Windows 10 Pro to my desktop and activate this new install with the product key from my old Surface Pro no longer in use?

    Reusing windows 10 retail product key from broken pc

    Soon after windows 8 first came out I downloaded it and purchased the product key which I used to upgrade from windows XP. There was a special offer at the time which meant it cost only about £15.00 but it is a genuine retail key not OEM. I later upgraded
    to windows 10 using that product key. After some months the computer, which was really quite old, broke down completely. I now have a new windows 10 computer. However this only has windows 10 home installed and the key for the old computer is the pro version.
    I have read that you can deactivate a product key on one machine and reuse it on a new one. However, as the old computer does not work I cannot do this. Is there any other way to deactivate and reuse the old product key on my new computer?

    Reuse windows 10 production key from a so-broken-old-laptop?

    I actually accidentally did some irreversible damage to my laptop, which is running on windows 10. Now I get a new one, but I would need to reuse the production key in order to have the new computer running on win10. As the old laptop is so broken that
    it won't boot, is there any way I can extract the key from it?

    Why was I not asked for a product key when upgrading to Win 10?

    According to your spec you have Win 10 Pro, but perhaps that doesn't reflect your PC.

    You haven't stated which edition of Win 10 you have on this machine, nor what your Win 10 key is for.

    For example, if you already have Win 10 Pro and your key is Win 10 Home, that would be a retrograde step.
