How to run a program on a remote host using the client’s GPU?

I have graphically-intensive programs on a Windows 10 host on the local network. I would like to use these programs remotely from another machine on the network, which is easy enough with VNC or RDP. But I also would like to run them on the client’s GPU because it is much more powerful. Maybe use the client’s memory and CPU too. How to do this? I can run Windows 10, 11, or Linux on the client machine for this purpose. The important thing is to use the client GPU.

    :)

    RDC Host and Client Understanding

Hi Hibs, welcome to the Ten Forums.

In Remote Desktop Connection, the Remote Host is the computer or virtual machine you connect to, and the Remote Client is the computer or virtual machine you use to connect to that Remote Host.

This is where the terms used get really complicated:
Your Windows 10 computer is when speaking about virtualization the virtualization host. The Windows XP Hyper-V virtual machine on your Windows 10 host is the virtualization guest. In other words, you are running a Windows XP guest on your Windows 10 host.

That's the virtualization, virtual host and guest. The Remote Desktop steps in and totally confuses you now with new terms: For Remote Desktop, when trying to connect from your Windows 10 virtual host to your virtual Windows XP guest, the terms are totally different. Now your virtual host Windows 10 is called a client, and your virtual guest Windows XP is called a host.

    Let's try to clarify this:
    • In virtual computing:
      • HOST = The main computer running a virtualization program or hypervisor, for instance Hyper-V
      • GUEST = the virtual machine on the above mentioned Host
    • In Remote Desktop:
      • HOST = The computer or virtual machine you will connect to using a Remote Desktop Connection
      • CLIENT = The computer you use to connect to another computer or virtual machine
In your case now you cannot do what you want to. Your virtual Guest Windows XP is a Home edition which cannot be used as a Remote Host. A Remote Host must be Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista Business, Ultimate or Enterprise, Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise, Windows 8 / 8.1 Pro or Enterprise, or Windows 10 Pro, Education or Enterprise Edition.

You cannot connect to (read = these editions cannot be remote hosts) Windows XP Home, Windows Vista Home Starter, Basic & Premium, Windows 7 Starter, Hoime Basic / Premium, Windows 8 & 8.1, or Windows 10 with Remote Desktop Connection.

In your case the only two alternatives are:
    1. Get a Windows XP Professional license
    2. USe a third party remote desktop application to connect to Windows XP Home. TeamViewer is my recommendation (using a third party remote app, the audio will never be enough for you to work with audio files but you can of course try)

  3. Use host GPU in Remote Desktop Session

    Hello all,

I'm trying to get my host computer, Windows 10, to use the GPU graphics card (3060Ti) during a remote desktop session from my Windows 11 laptop.

I did some searching around and every post/article I found pointed me towards a local group policy change.

The instructions for all that I found all looked something like this.

    - Enter gpedit.msc then Press Enter key

    - Navigate to
    Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment

    - Enable “Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions

    - Reconnect the RDP or restart the device, now the GPU should be activated for RDP sessions and DirectX/OpenGL should be supported

I did the above changes on my host computer (windows 10) and all I got was big nope from my direct X test and also the 3060Ti did not show in me Device Manager

On the off chance that I was supposed to make the change to the client machine...I tired that too and nothing.

Does the host machine have to be running Windows Server for this to work?

    Any help would be appreciated

    Thanks!

  4. How to run a program on a remote host using the client’s GPU?

    remote desktop connection

You will need to analyse the various stages that form part of the remote desktop connection. This will require some time and patience.

A remote desktop connection consists of these components:

    • A host (which must run Windows Professional). This is the machine that you wish to control.
    • A client (which can run any version of Windows). This is the machine that you work on.
    • A link that connects the client with the host.
Is the host on the same network as the client or is it on a different network?
