Windows 10: How to separate the Download and Documents root folders in File Explorer

So I had a problem when I finished reinstalling my laptop. I wanted to change the default root files from Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Videos and Music which were originally on Drive C to Drive D. Everything went smoothly until I set the Documents and Downloads sections, for some reason their folders were merged into the same root, so if I moved the Documents root folder, the download section also moved the root folder. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Downloads folder is the Documents folder

I suggest you to Restore to Default the folders and document settings and see if it helps.

Step 1:

Please follow below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Download folder.
• Right click on the Download Folder and go to Properties.
• In Properties go to Location tab.
• In location Tab Click on Restore Default.

Step 2:

Please follow below steps and check if it helps.

• Go to Documents folder.
• Right click on the Document folder and go to Properties.
• In Properties go to Location tab.
• In location Tab Click on Restore Default.

After performing above steps change the settings as you required and check if it helps.

Accidentally merged Downloads folder with Documents Folder

When redirected, Downloads & Documents each have two values under this key. In each pair, both keys should have the same path.
Documents:

• Pesonal
• {f42ee2d3-909f-4907-8871-4c22fc0bf756}

Downloads:

• {374DE290-123F-4565-9164-39C4925E467B}
• {7d83ee9b-2244-4e70-b1f5-5393042af1e4}

If you moved the files when you relocated the folders, they will alll be in the root of D:\ & you will have to sort out manually. Delete any desktop.ini files that your find (you have to enable viewing all hidden files)

 

How To Separate Windows 10 Document Folders?

Open File Explorer

Go into your user folder inside C:\Users

Create a new folder inside your user folder and name it Documents

Then move any files that should be in your Documents folder from the Videos folder into that new folder

Perform the same steps to create a new Downloads folder inside your user folder

Close File Explorer.

Open the Registry Editor again, it will still be in the same window.

Double click {F42EE2D3-909F-4907-8871-4C22FC0BF756}, set its Value Data to this and click OK

Double click Personal, set its Value Data to this and click OK

Double click {7D83EE9B-2244-4E70-B1F5-5393042AF1E4}, set its Value Data to this and click OK

Close the registry Editor, then restart (not shut down) your PC to apply the change.

That will have separated the Downloads, Documents and Videos folders.
