Windows 11 fallback font not working

    Laptop: Samsung Galaxy Book Pro

    System: Windows 11 Home 22H2

I use the enclosed alphanumeric supplement unicode block a lot in my work:

    Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement - Wikipedia

This unicode block is supported by the Segoe UI Symbols font and the Noto Sans Symbols font. Both are installed on my computer.

However, when I paste such characters into my Microsoft Word document, they appear as crossed-out rectangles. I have to manually select the text and change the font to Segoe UI Symbols for the characters to appear properly. The characters also appear as cross-out rectangles when I paste them into another notetaking app I'm using (which doesn't innately have select font properties but instead takes on the system fallback font). The characters also don't appear on my Google Chrome browser.

The thing is, the characters showed up properly in Microsoft Word (with Arial as default font) and the particular notetaking app in the first paste and showed up well in Google chrome (with Arial as default font) in my previous laptop (Windows 10 Pro 21H1).

In my current laptop, I tried changing the default font of Microsoft Word to Segoe UI Symbols and the default font of Google chrome to Noto Sans Symbols. This worked, but it didn't solve the root problem and the fonts still don't appear in my notetaking app even with Ctrl+Shift+V. This leads me to conclude that the problem is in my current Windows fallback font system. There is no font fallback going on at all, and I have to manually adjust the fonts for every app/browser This is a pity because there is no way I can properly display these special characters in apps that take on the system's fallback font (the one I'm using is called Supernotes: Supernotes | The best collaborative note-taking app ).

I've tried the "Restore default font settings" with restarts multiple times. All my Windows updates are up to date. Still not working. Any solutions?

Windows 11 fallback font not working

    Thanks for the reply.

    (1) Clear font cache: I tried this, but I don't think it worked

This is what I got when I pasted all the commands at once:

This is what I got when I pasted the commands one by one:
    C:\Windows\System32>net stop FontCache

    (2) Check application-specific font settings: Not sure what you mean by "Set the font to a suitable fallback font." How do you access fallback fonts in Word or Chrome? (my notetaking app just takes on the font of the system). If you mean the default fonts, they are already set to Segoe UI and Noto Sans Symbols resepctively. But that didn't solve the problem. And the fallback font system should work even if the default fonts are different (like on my previous computer with windows).

    (3) UTF-8 compatibility settings: tried this in the past, and tried it again this time but didn't work. Tried different countries for current system locale (Korean, English (US), German), but they all didn't work. Beta: use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support was always on.

Is there a way to set my own fallback fonts for the windows system?

Windows 11 fallback font not working

    Hello EJ,

Good to see you in Microsoft Community.

Firstly, could you let me know the specific system version? You can check it by pressing the Win key + R key, and typing "winver", then press Enter, please take a screenshot/photo of it, and only send the relevant information without PII in the next reply.

To address this issue, you can try the following steps:

    1. Clear font cache: Sometimes, font cache corruption can lead to display issues. To clear the font cache, follow these steps: Run Command Prompt as an administrator ("Win" logo key + "Q" to open Search box, type"Command Prompt", select "Run as administrator"), and copy and paste the following commands into the Command Prompt and press Enter to run one by one.

Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved.
    2. Check application-specific font settings: Some applications have their own font settings that override the system defaults. Check the font settings within the problematic applications (Microsoft Word, Google Chrome, and your notetaking app) to ensure they are not set to a font that doesn't support the characters you need. Set the font to a suitable fallback font like Segoe UI Symbols or Noto Sans Symbols.
    3. UTF-8 compatibility settings: "Win" logo key + "Q", open the search box, type "Control", enter to open "Control Panel" (View by category) > "Clock and Region" > "Change date, time, or number formats" under "Region" > "Administrative" tab > Change system locale...", select the region corresponding to your system in "Current system locale", then check "Beta: use Unicode UTF-8 for worldwide language support", then All "OK" to save the settings, restart the system.
If anything is unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

    Best Regards,
