HOW TO SET UP AN IDE HARD DISK IN WINDOWS 10

I want to be able to access existing data from 5 No. old IDE Hard Disks by adding them externally to my new Windows 10 PC.

I therefore recently purchased a USB hard disk adaptor (with a separate power supply) that, in theory, should allow me to connect any IDE or SATA external hard disk via a USB port.

It works just fine with 3 of the IDE disks - but not with the remaining 2! They are a Conner CFS425A (425Mb) and a Samsung SHD-3121A (125Mb). They are both set up as ‘Masters’ , spin OK and I have no reason to believe that there is any fault with them (I have previously used them on old 486 PCs).

Windows 10 recognises both of them upon connection (with a ‘ding-dong’) but then fails to show them in “This PC”. However, in Disk Management, it lists them both as “Disk 6” (when run separately of course) and adds “Unknown” & “Not Initialised”. My PC also shows them in “Device Manager” (including brand/model).

A fellow Community “good guy” very generously and expertly ‘talked me through” a somewhat similar problem earlier (involving setting up a SATA disk, with some “power use” of the Command Prompt), however, that disk had no data on it (and apparently it would have been lost if there had have been) – these 2 IDE disks do hold data and I want to retain/retrieve it! I have seen reference to “mounting disks manually” – whether this is relevant or not I don’t know.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

    :)

  2. Hard Disk Failure : Event ID 13150

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I suggest you to Run the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter
    and check.

Follow the steps to run the troubleshooter:

    • Type "Troubleshooting" in the Search box from the desktop and click "Troubleshooting".
    • Click on "View all" from the left pane and select "Hardware and Devices".
    • Click on “Advanced” and then click on “Run as Administrator”.
    • Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.

If issue still persists, I suggest you to run check disk on the hard drive to see if there are any corruptions.

    Follow the below steps:

    1. Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).

    2. In the Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    chkdsk /f

Disclaimer: While performing check disk on the hard drive, if any bad sectors are found then check disk will try to repair that sector. Any data available on a bad sector might be
    lost.

Once Check Disk completes, boot the computer and then check if the issue resolved.

Hope this helps in resolving the issue. If the issue persists, do get back to us. We will be happy to assist you.

    Thank You

    hard disk drive problem

i have a western digital 120 gb ide hard drive ( there was still 25 gb free space ) and everything was running fine until i decided to update windows xp home edition service pack 1 to service pack 2. I updated the windows and after the updating was done it asked me to restart the computer so i restarted the computer and it was normal then the windows would not start up. i turned off the computer and then turned it back on, everything gets on normally but it gets stock at where it says windows xp, it just stays there forever therefore i dont get to my desktop. Any idea what might be causing the problem?

I have an old hard disk drive which im not using and it has 10 gb space. Can i plug it to my system and run the windows from that and still be able use my other hard disk too so i can uninstall the service pack 2 from my hard disk.

    Waiting for your suggestions!

Thank you for your time !

  4. HOW TO SET UP AN IDE HARD DISK IN WINDOWS 10

Improve SATA hard disk performance (Convert from IDE to AHCI)

Every hard drive in a modern computer is connected to the system through a storage controller. This controller typically can communicate with the hard drive via a number of different interface protocols. For maximum compatibility many computers are configured in the BIOS to use the older IDE interface protocol to communicate with modern SATA hard drives. This setting is acceptable for the average computer user but IDE lacks support for new technologies such as native command queuing (NCQ) and hot-plugging hard drives (add or remove drives without restarting the computers).

Intel invented a new storage controller interface known as AHCI (Advanced Host Controller Interface) that supports these new technologies with modern SATA hard drives. If you have a hard drive that supports NCQ, it is worth a try to see if your disk performance improves with your workload.

The main problem preventing users from changing the storage interface protocol from IDE to AHCI in the past has been blue screens that could only be cured by undoing the BIOS change or reinstalling Windows. The cause of the problem is the mass storage driver installed when Windows was first setup. Since IDE was enabled at install only the IDE storage driver was configured in Windows. With the AHCI driver missing, Windows cannot read from the hard drive and throws a BSOD with error code 0x0000005B.

Now there is an easy solution that will allow you to switch between IDE and AHCI in the bios and Windows will boot without any problems. The key is to enable the AHCI driver in Windows before you make the setting change in the BIOS.

For most users this will work:

Open Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\msahci.
Right click on the Start registry DWORD and select Modify.

Set the value to 0 and click OK.

Now the Start setting should be set to 0.

Reboot and enable the AHCI setting in your BIOS.
If you are using a RAID adapter or other interface try the following:

Open up Registry Editor and naviage to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStorV OR HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\iaStor.
    Repeat the steps above.
Not all users will see a major performance improvement with AHCI and a SATA hard drive but NCQ can be very helpful under the right workload. Post your experience and setup in the comments below.
