Windows 10: How to stop automatic restart for update

Recently I was not using my laptop for a while and when I returned I found it had restarted. In that weird way though where the lock screen changes to the default. When I log in unsaved files had been closed which is stupid. There was no update in Windows update history which is stupid however I could tell there was an update because the Windows search bar changed. A simple solution but one that works in most circumstances!

1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.

2. In the list of services, right-click Automatic Updates, and then click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

4. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

5. Right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and then click Properties.

6. In the Startup type list, click Manual, and then click Apply.

7. If Service status is set to Stopped, click Start, and then click OK.

Any Way to Stop Update Automatic Restarts?

Hello @br4 , welcome to Ten Forums.

I've found that the simplest way to handle all aspects of Windows Update is NOT to use it.

I use WAU Manager. Option Seven, here: Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10



This is how I have mine set up...








When you click on "Update Windows Now" in the lower right... it checks for updates and lists all that are available, with check boxes to install or not install them.
IMO, it's much simpler and totally manual, so you can do your updates when YOU want to do them.
