Windows 10: How to stop USB enumeration.

Hi,


Recently Windows changed behavior how it treats different USB devices and it seems it starts to distinct them by SN, which it didn't previously.


I work in mobile repair service and it really matters that the modem COM port stays always the same, also when using various IoT devices. I have dozens of the devices connected each day and it becomes a nightmare each time checking the COM and the device COM number ventures into hundreds.


It worked previously fine when adding registry to exclude certain HWID's according to FTDI guidance for example.


The previous fix was like that. You put the needed devices in exclusion and it worked, not anymore.

3.0 USB OTG Device Enumeration fails in windows 10

This issue occurs when proper drivers are not detected after the initial installation so reinstallation of the drivers helps resolve the issue. However, in order to get to the root cause of the issue, please reply with the following questions to help
you further with the issue:

• Have you tried connecting the device to any other port?
  
• Is the issue specific to a particular computer?
  
• What is the make and model of the computer?
  

In the meantime, I suggest you to refer the methods mentioned below and see if that helps in resolving the issue:



Method 1: Checking drivers in Device Manager



I suggest you to check if there is any yellow yield for the USB drivers in Device Manager. To check please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Press and hold the Windows + X key on the keyboard.
   
2. Select Device manager.
   
3. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers
   and check if the USB device that you are connecting has yellow yield on it.
   
4. If you find the device with yellow yield, right click on it and click on
   Update Driver.
   
5. Click on Search automatically for updated driver software.
   
6. Once the driver is updated restart the computer.
   

Method 2: Uninstalling the drivers



If updating the drivers didn’t fix the issue, I suggest you to uninstall the driver for the USB device and reconnect the device to install the drivers again. Please follow the steps mentioned below:

1. Press and hold the Windows + X key on the keyboard.
   
2. Select Device manager.
   
3. Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers,
   right click on the USB device and click on Uninstall device.
   
4. Reconnect the USB device to install the drivers for the device.

I suggest you to start the Portable Device Enumerator Service and check if it helps.

Method 1: Follow the below steps:

• Press Windows key + R from the Keyboard.
• Type services.msc and hit Enter.
• Search for Portable Device Enumerator Service.
• Double click on Portable Device Enumerator Service and click on
  Start button.
• Click on the dropdown list and set the Startup type to
  Automatic.

If the issue persists try next method.

Method 2: Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter.

I suggest you to run hardware and devices troubleshooter and check.

• Press the Windows + X, and click on
  Search.
• Type troubleshooting and select Troubleshooting.
• Click on Hardware and Sound and select Hardware and Devices and click on
  Next to run the troubleshooter

Method 3:
Update USB Controllers.

To update the USB Controllers from Device Manager follow these steps.

• Go to Device manager in control panel.
• Select Device manager and a Device Manager window will pop-up.
• Double Click on USB Controllers to expand.
• Right click on the USB Controllers that is listed and select Update.
