Windows 10: How to "Store" a Windows 10 key for use on a completely different system reliably.

I have an old 4GB HDD laptop that has a valid W10 Pro 64-Bit installation on it, but the hardware is just too slow to use Windows. So I want to install another non-Windows OS on it.
However, I don't want to throw away a valid Windows licence that I might want to install on another computer at some point.

I'm aware Windows 10 stores your key on MS's servers which is hashed with your hardware, most notably I think it's the motherboard and I've used that when upgrading computers and re-activating in the past.

Most recently I re-activated completely new hardware and it gave me a list of Windows licences under my account to choose from and I picked one that was from hardware that has since expired and the licence was free. This "menu" to pick from was really quite nice and new to me.

My question is this:

Can I safely assume that option of which of my license to use will always be available when I activate on other machines? Specifically, the Windows install on this old laptop I have to wipe?

Thanks but I don't want to do any decrypting. I want to download a Win 10 ISO from Microsoft and install it using my Win 8 key. No other steps required. Is that possible?
