All Updates Failing with Error 0x800f0845

Hi Gary, here is a status report.

I didn't expect anything you suggested would work, because it's the same answer that I've seen dozens of times for dozens of unrelated issues. It probably has nothing to do with the specific error code my Windows Update is showing. It would be nice if you
could explain what Error 0x800f0845 is - I can't find it documented anywhere.

Nevertheless, I tried the first part of your suggested solution:

net stop bits

net stop cryptsvc

net stop wuauserv

net stop msiserver

Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

net start bits

net start cryptsvc

net start wuauserv

net start msiserver

I then allowed windows Update to try to install KB4532938 with these results:





Same error.

While I doubt it will make any difference because I have not installed any software since before this issue started, I will try your "clean boot" suggestion next. I get the feeling I am just wasting time because you don't really know what's wrong and you
are just making a boilerplate suggestion. I've been using Windows since 3.1 and back then "Reinstall Windows" was the most common "troubleshooting" technique. 25 years later, is that still the preferred solution for every windows problem?

 

Who has seen this vista update error

When you go to Windows vista update and it tell you to update a driver that you have already updated. Then it says failed to update and gives you the error code that tell you that you already have a never version than that. WTF? Why in the world would it be trying to updated something with an older driver. Well the only way to get it out of your windows update list is to go uninstall what ever that driver is then run the update and install it. Then run the newer drivers again.

Well I still can't get the Nivida Network Bridge to disappear out of the list. I uninstall the one in device manager and go to the update and before it's even done with that. Vista is automatically installing a newer version than is in the Vista update list.......
