  1. How to "Take Ownership" but for Another User?

    Hello,

I finally gave in after a year and a half of battling with my chronically freeze-inducing and corrupted start menu and have just finished reinstalling Windows 10 on my machine (I had already repeatedly tried every fix I could find: sfc /scannow, DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, creating a new user profile, third-party software, etc. with no success).

I needed to avoid losing any installed software and so I attempted to added the "Take Ownership" option to my context menu and was then able to easily move my data.

However - now when I try to log in to my personal user profile, Windows begins to log me in and then pauses for a moment and then just goes back to the log in screen. I am thinking this is because many/most all of the files under my personal profile still have the "Owner" set to "Administrator" from when I "took ownership" of the files to move them as mentioned above. I have searched online endlessly but can't find the answer to my question: how can I "take ownership" or assign ownership of files and folders to a different user account? I cannot log in to my personal account so I cannot take ownership that way. If I take ownership from the Administrator account or any other account that doesn't help either because that user is assigned as the file owner and not myself. Does anyone know of a script or perhaps a PowerShell/batch/VB script that can help me with this?

My machine is running Windows 10 Education v. 1903 OS build 18362.449.

Thank you very much for your help!!

    Richard

  2. Ownership Issues

that will not hurt taking ownership, but I would also then look in the list of users on the ownership page and make sure your user account name is there with full permissions. Probably not.

even though you take ownership of an item, you may not be in the list of users with permissions.

first select disable inheritance, then select "ADD" in the list of users, and add your user account the same way you took ownership and select full permissions.

Then administrators may only have select permissions in the list. so after you disable inheritance, delete admins user. then select add again and select admins in the list and select full permissions

    restart pc

Current active users that are friends

The other reason I suggested this is that users can add characters to their username that are not alphanumeric (e.g. user*). This confuses things somewhat when looking at the list.

  4. How to "Take Ownership" but for Another User?

    ownership

To take ownership of a file or folder

Open File Explorer, and then locate the file or folder you want to take ownership of.

Right-click the file or folder, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

Click Edit, and then do one of the following:

To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click Other users and groups and, in Enter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group, and then click OK.

To change the owner to a user or group that is listed, in the Change owner to box, click the new owner.

(Optional) To change the owner of all subcontainers and objects within the tree, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
