Windows 10: How to tell if a Window 10 Pro version was previously purchased

We had a user leave the organization and we had no access to an admin account on his Surface Pro 7. We had to reimage the machine using the downloaded system image for that machine. However, the only download options were Windows 10 Home versions. I think that the machine came with the Home version originally but then was upgraded to the Pro version along the way but I cannot verify that. Is there a way to check this? I need the Pro version and do not want to purchase the upgrade again if it was already purchased. Unfortunately, and records at the organization of which account would have

Which is good news actually, because Windows 8.1 is loads cheaper than previous versions (retail licensing at Windows 7 OEM prices). And it sort of puts a huge hole in the Windows subscription theory.

 

Windows 10 purchased version -- can't personalize settings ...

I've attempted to resolve this issue by reinstalling Windows 10 several times, as suggested (by the help desk I contacted following the steps provided here). During install it only offers me Windows 10 pro as an option. It doesn't allow me to select the
home version, which is what I originally purchased.

I purchased Windows 10 through Amazon.

As I mentioned earlier, I was attempting to install from the disk to a new SSD disk. When prompted during the install process, two options were offered. Pro and Home versions. Pro was the default setting in this option phase and I just proceeded with it
as a Pro install. Hence my dilemma.

All functions are operating and I'm able to use my laptop without hindrance. However I can not activate this version to personalize any settings. When I try to use the code key that is on the disk package, it tells me I need to activate my copy ... so it's
a circular halt.

Any help would be appreciate.
