Windows 10: how to transfer photos from Android cell phone to Windows 10 laptop

I want to transfer photos from my LG6 Android cellphone to my Windows 10 laptop. Instructions were to connect cellphone and laptop to same One Drive account, but no directions were provided on how to do this! I have an account in my phone in the One Drive App labelled with my gmail account, which is the same gmail account on my laptop. But laptop does NOT see my cellphone, even when the 2 are connected with a cable same cable I use to charge phone; this of course should not be needed. Why are supposedly simple procedures and instructions so difficult to decipher and execute ???? W

I am having difficulties transferring my photos from my Android phone to Windows 10. With earlier versions of Windows, I would simply plug my phone into the laptop with USB and I would get a box popped up that would ask me what I wanted to do - easy peasy.
Now, when I plug my phone into the USB, I do not get the pop-up box. I can see the phone in My Computer, but I cannot find the photos or move them. I tried to sync my photos to One Drive, thinking that I could then download them from One Drive to my laptop,
but that has not worked for me to date. What is the easiest way to transfer photos from Android phone to Windows 10?
