Windows 10: How to transfer Windows operating system license to another system

Hi Support,I am using Windows 10 Professional retail license. The existing system having some display problems and i want to transfer the existing Windows 10 Professional license to another New system.What is the procedure and how to deactivate the Windows 10 license in the faulty System and also how to activate it in the new system.Please advise and awaiting for your reply at the earliest.ThanksPradeep.R

Transfering windows operating system to new computer

You do not tell us what type of License you have.

If the Laptop/Computer came with the Windows Operating System preinstalled (Dell, HP, Acer, etc) , that Product Key that came with the Laptop/Computer is for the preinstalled OEM License and is non-transferable.

The OEM License/Product Key (preinstalled Operating Systems on Dell, HP, etc machines) is tied to the first machine it is installed on and dies when that machine dies.

The above rule also applies to OEM System Builders Licenses.

Retail Operating System License, that you buy and install yourself, are allowed to be transferred to another machine.

But Retail Licenses can also only be installed on one machine at any particular time.

Sometimes, this could be due to two operating system installed in your computer. Just to make sure this is not the case, I suggest you to try the steps below:

1. Press Windows key + R.

2. Type msconfig and press enter.

3. Click the "boot" tab and check if there are any other operating system listed.

4. In addition, change the timeout time to 3 seconds(default)

Transferring license of windows 8.1 system builder

Under the terms of the OEM System Builder license, it has no transfer rights.

OEM versions of Windows 8.1 are identical to Full License Retail versions except for the following:

- OEM versions do not offer any free Microsoft direct support from Microsoft support personnel

- OEM licenses are tied to the very first computer you install and activate it on

- OEM versions allow all hardware upgrades except for an upgrade to a different model motherboard

- OEM versions cannot be used to directly upgrade from an older Windows operating system

That said, you could chance it and try phone activation since persons have managed to reactivate OEM system builder licenses with a new motherboard that way.

1. Press Windows key + X then clickRun, then type:
slui.exe 4

2. Next press the 'ENTER' key

3. Select your 'Country' from the list.

4. Choose the 'Phone Activation' option.

5. Stay on the phone (do not select/press any options) and wait for a person to help you with activation.

6. Explain your problem clearly to the support person.
