How to turn off Heap Termination on corruption for Explorer in Windows 10

If you disable Heap Termination on corruption policy in Windows 10 your File Explorer process will not get terminated automatically immediately on corruption. A certain legacy application will be allowed to function in the meantime. However, your File Explorer may eventually get terminated.

If you have Windows x64, File Explorer the policy is enabled by default. This way as soon as it gets corrupted, it will be terminated.

The Policy, Heap Termination on corruption, is a bit misleading as heap is not getting terminated. It is the process that is terminating once it recognizes that the File Explorer has been corrupted. So, enabling the policy, Turn off Heap Termination on corruption, will stop File Explorer from terminating immediately when it gets corrupted.

The reason for enabling this policy is to make Explorer give backward compatibility concession to older extensions that used to get away after corrupting the File Explorer. This way, your Explorer on Windows x64 will work similarly to that on Windows x86.

These are the two ways by which you can turn off Heap termination on corruption in Windows systems:

    1. By Group Policy Editor
    2. By Registry Editor
    1] By Group Policy Editor

To turn off heap termination we are going to use Group Policy Editor. It is the easiest method to do the same as we just have to alter a policy and we are good to go.

So, to do that, hit Win + R, type “gpedit.msc”, and hit Enter to open Group Policy Editor. Now, navigate to the following location.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer

Look for “Turn off heap termination on corruption” from the list of policies. Double-click on it to open, select Enabled and click Apply > OK.

Disabling heap termination on corruption can allow certain legacy plug-in applications to function without terminating Explorer immediately, although Explorer may still terminate unexpectedly later.

Now, your File Explorer won’t be terminated immediately.

    2] By Registry Editor

Group Policy Editor is not available in Windows 10 Home (or any Windows ), but this doesn’t mean you can not stop your Fire Explorer from terminating. You can alter the same policy with the help of the Registry Editor.

Open Registry Editor by Win + R, type “regedit”, and hit Enter. Go to the following locations.

    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

If you can not find the “Explorer” key, right-click on Windows, select New > Key, and name it “Explorer”.

Right-click on Explorer and select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name the newly created value “NoHeapTerminationOnCorruption“, set the Value data to 1, and click OK.

This way you will have disabled Heap Termination of File Explorer.

    Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

    • Open a new Explorer window.
    • Click View in the ribbon.
    • Click Options.
    • Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
    • Click OK

  3. Kernel Mode Heap Corruption in WIndows 10 Pro

    Hi Martin,

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

I understand that you are facing Blue Screen of Death on your PC with error Kernel Mode Heap Corruption. For further clarity on the issue, please respond to the questions below.

    1. Which build version of Windows 10 are you using currently?
    2. Are you aware of any changes made to the PC prior to which you weren’t facing this issue?
    3. What is the make and model of the PC?

Refer the article Which version of Windows operating system am I running?

Usually, The KERNEL_MODE_HEAP_CORRUPTION bug check has a value of 0x0000013A. This indicates that the kernel mode heap manager has detected corruption in a heap.

Meanwhile, I would suggest you to refer the article
    Troubleshoot blue screen errors
    and see if that helps.

However, to find the root cause of the issue, we need to analyze the crash dump files created during the error. You can locate the dump files in the location
C:\Windows\Minidump, share the dump files through OneDrive with us.

Microsoft Internet Explorer renamed to Windows Internet Explorer ?

Since version 7 of the world`s most popular web browser - Microsoft Internet Explorer was silently renamed to Windows Internet Explorer.Such a step from Microsoft is not a surprise since Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operation system for a long time.Obviously Microsoft corp. wants to state that Internet Explorer is already considered as a part of Windows and not as an external browser (remember the IE and WMP law issues last year!?).
