Windows 10: How to unlink a Microsoft account from Local windows account?

I have a work pc with windows 10. There is no domain but my local account is associated with my work O365 profile. A LOT of stuff is installed and configured under my current account which is an administrator. So I cant delete my account or reinstall windows.


I needed to screen record something and read on a forum that the xbox app can be used to do this. I opened this and it prompted for a logon. I foolishly used my sons windows login as he uses the xbox. I do have a windows account but at the time it didn't occur to me to use that. Microsoft windows at this instant seems to have linked the my sons windows account to my local pc account via the Xbox app. Why would you make this assumption without asking!!!. I can see this in Settings - Accounts - My Account. There now seems to be no way to unlink them. What is worse, Windows now prevents me from using Chrome or Firefox based on parental controls...yet allows me to use Edge. This is either dishonesty on the part of Microsoft or sheer incompetence. I need Chrome as my company software requires that to run.


I have tried by adding my own msoft account to the pc, and by deleting my device from my sons windows online profile. But the invalid link still persists....and Chrome doesn't work.

Strange Windows 10 User Account issue.

Unfortunately I had done those steps numerous reboots, it just, reappears for no good reason. The base account isn't even a Microsoft account, it's a local account.

I haven't quite tried the built in administrator account on W10, but so far in my experience on my own computer, the built in account seemed to have absolutely no more control than I did on my own.

It's just strange, I go in, it warns me twice about deleting the account, then it's gone. Reboot, and it's back?

EDIT: Just to specify, both command line and Netplwiz both say only HIS account exists on the computer, it doesn't list this rogue account. This is what I meant in my first post about the fact that even Windows doesn't seem to believe it exists, HALF the time. *Frown

Yea, I would create a local account and just use your school account to login to Outlook and Onedrive.

Here switch between local and microsoft account.
