Windows 10: How to Upgrade a Windows 7 laptop to Windows 10 (Media creation tool says I need product key)

One of my users needs his laptop upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10.


I tried using the Windows Media Creation Tool - it fails and says I need a product key, although there is no option to put in a product key.


When I go to My Computer > Properties to see if there is a link to upgrade there, there is not. There is a link to upgrade to another version of Windows 7 and an icon that says "Ask for Genuine Microsoft Software" that doesn't take me anywhere to do with Windows 10.


I have tried finding the answer to this through Google but everything points me to the Media Creation Tool, which does not work.

Google and download the "Windows 10 media creation tool"

Create a USB flash drive ISO and that's all you need...it will work without needing a key..
Just skip past entering a key during full install and delete all partitions, format, create new drive and install...

As long as you have upgraded from Windows 8 first...you need to do that prior to using your Windows 8 key for 10.

Does the media creation tool automatically detect the product key from motherboard in a "desktop"?

Or does it work only in laptops?

I had an old desktop with me so i decided to give my pc to the computer centre for installing the latest software.

they removed the old hardware and gave it to me and then installed new hardware.

They installed and activated windows 8.1 pro for me.

Now my pc is running windows 10 10240.

I dont have a factory reset option and my rollback option has expired.

Thus i am going with media creation tool.

Will it detect my product key because my pc is a desktop ?

If it wont how to retrieve my product key before installation?

My pc is now running windows 10 10240 , it activated automatically after the upgrade and is my first Windows 10 Build , after upgrade this was my first build.

Please help.

starting with the November update Windows 10 may be activated using your Windows 7 or 8.1 product key this is a reminder you have until July 29th,2016 to upgrade to Windows 10 for free after July 30th,2016 Windows 10 will be 99.99 to upgrade

if you have a Media Creation Tool Backed up you will be able to use that after July 29th, because you are entitled to a digital license you must have Windows 7 Service Pack 1 or Windows 8.1 to upgrade
