Windows 10: How to URGENTLY restore files and bookmarks?

My laptop Dell, decided to update last night and when I tried to restore pages on Google Chrome everything was seriously messed up. All of my bookmarks were deleted and I have no idea how to get them back. Hopefully this issue was resolved with others? I believe what may have occurred is that I clicked sync which synced my phone bookmarks with my laptop's, thus deleting all laptop bookmarks. Stupid idea on behalf of Google to not warn users about the issues that could arise from syncing devices. Anyone know a fix to this? I have lost many important school documents and healthcare files that

Use multiple bookmark files

Martin here: my backed up bookmarks file (~1800 bookmarks) is under 500 kB, but the places.sqlite file in my profile (C:\Users\mnger\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\losj3o06.default) is 25MB. Looking inside it with a hex viewer shows it contains a lot more than simply the links - I have no idea why. However, if yours is 26GB, then simple scaling suggests some 2 millions bookmarks and a backup file of 500MB. I expect that is unlikely, but if your places file is that large, then it contains much more than links.

Have you tried backing up your bookmarks and checked the file size?

Following on from my first response, I thought of suggesting you could keep different copies of sqlite and drop them into your profile as required, but could not recommend it as I didn't know how well that would work. But after asking about your bookmark backup, another thought occurs: you could backup all your current bookmarks, then throw out all but one 'category' and then back that category up with an appropriate label. Repeat for each category, then simply restore the backup to match your current needs.

But you could achieve the same with folders, simply moving the current category to the top of the bookmark menu by choosing an appropriate name - or even burying the unwanted ones under a folder beginning with z (so they are at the bottom of the list). Lots of possibilities...

How to restore bookmarks using windows.old file

Hi,

You can just copy the bookmark to the Firefox folder located in a folder called Profiles.

To do this, follow these steps:

• Click the Windows Start button. The Start menu will open.
• In the Search box at the bottom of the Start menu, type:
  
  %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
  
  without pressing Enter. A list of profiles will appear at the top of the Start menu.
  
• Click on the profile with “default” in the name to open it in a window.

BOOKMARK MISSING

Recovery is possible but tricky. You could try this:

• Shut down Firefox.
• Manually copy the old backup files into the current backup folder.
• Use a Google search to find out how to restore bookmarks from backup, using a query such as
