Windows 10: How to use Focus Assist Activation on Full Screen Apps with Nvidia Geforce In-Game Overlay

This is indeed the solution.

Problem: Focus assist would stay on even after a steam game is closed.
Disabling the GeForce Overlay did the trick. Now when i quit a game focus assist stops.

It's not as if I care about that auto message as much as the fact that Focus Assist turns on even when on desktop, due to this conflict with Nvidia Geforce Experience.

You may just alternatively disable the in game overlay to avoid the conflict thats mentioned here, and in the Nvidia forums.

 

Unable to disable Focus Assist

There is a possible workaround for this. If you have GeForce Experience installed, open it up and disable "in-game overlay" in the General settings. When I do this, it stops Windows 10 from thinking the desktop is 'full screen'
mode.
