Windows 10: How to use Windows Hello to unlock computer but not for anything else?

Recently bought Surface Pro 7 and set up Windows Hello face recognition + pin on a local account.


I use some Microsoft apps To-Do, OneNote, etc. with a personal Microsoft account.


Now when I try to use those apps, I am asked to "Use Windows Hello with your account".

If I remove Windows Hello from my PC, then I can log into the apps normally with e-mail and password.


What I want is to use Windows Hello to unlock my PC with a local account and to use my Microsoft Account only on the apps without associating it with Windows Hello.


This worked perfectly on my older Surface Pro 4, so not sure what might be going on.


Any help is appreciated.

Windows Hello not working properly

Hi Jim,

For us to properly isolate the issue with your Windows Hello, we would like to know the following:

• Were there any changes made on your computer prior to the issue (e.g. updates, software installation)?
• To make sure that we have not missed on anything, what specific troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you try reinstalling your camera driver to resolve the issue.

Windows Hello face-unlock doesn't work, always ask me to enter a pin. Why?

Windows Hello is a more personal, more secure way to get instant access to your
Windows 10 devices using fingerprint or facial recognition. A
PIN on Windows Hello is recommended to ensure that you can still unlock and use your device even if you can't use your preferred biometric because the sensor is unavailable or not working properly.

To resolve your concern, we suggest that you re-enroll Windows Hello and change how you want to sign in via Settings. To do this, follow the steps listed below:

• Type Settings in the Search bar and press
  Enter.
• Go to Accounts then Sign-in options.
