Windows 10: How Useful is Defender Limited Periodic Scanning?

I use Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) 2016 which turns off Defender by default. I notice there is the new Defender feature of Limited Periodic Scanning. How useful is this for a KIS user? Does it add a useful layer of additional security or just hog resources for a limited benefit?

how do I change the build to 1607 so I can run windows defender off line?

A third-party AV app isn’t really a problem – you just have to enable Limited Periodic Scanning in order to use Windows Defender Offline:

The original blog for Limited Periodic Scanning made it sound like this feature would only allow Defender to do periodic (scheduled) scans on a PC that had a third-party AV app installed; but it actually enables all of the on-demand scanning options,
including WDO and the Command Line Interface. My screenshots came from a test box with Avast Free installed.

 

I haven't used a paid Antivirus and Firewall for nearly three years now, I just use Defender with Malwarebytes Pro. Before, in Windows 7, I used MSE and Malewarebytes Pro. So far, both have kept me protected. No real nasty stuff, just some pups which are easy to get rid of.

It just scans every once and a while, like an On-Demand-Scanner, but automatically, and doesn't run constantly in the background like an Anti-Virus when it is the only AV you have. Kind of like MBAM, but automatically.

As NO anti virus can offer 100% protection, the idea is, Defender will run a scan to see if it finds something a 3rd party AV might miss.

 

It sounds quite useful so I'll leave it set.

 

Defender does not have the Hi Tech looking UI that some AVs have but it does a great job *Smile
