  1. HP Laptop restarts every few mins after W10 installation

So let me tell you how everything happened in detail. A couple of weeks ago I installed W10 Pro x64 instead of W7 on my PC. Everything was ok the computer worked fine. I told my friend that I've done it. He was facing problems with installing it on his HP laptop so he asked me if I could come over and do it for him. I agreed. His laptop was running on W8.1. I brought the disk and started installing it. Everything was going smoothly. After it finished installing the laptop restarted and it wrote something like "Configuring devices..." and after a minute or so an error popped up saying that the installation can not continue because some devices aren't comfortable with W10. The laptop restarted again and then gave us another error saying to click "OK' to restart our PC. I clicked it the laptop restarted and gave the same error over and over again. I searched the internet for answers and found out that I had to change the value in "regedit" of some setup.exe file from 1 to 3. I did that and the installation finished successfully. The laptop booted into W10. We were happy that it finally worked but then a new problem came up. After a few mins the laptop shut down automatically. The shutdown was quite strange. The screen instantly went black although the laptop was still running. There were no error codes and after 10 seconds of the black screen the PC shutdown completely. We tried booting it up again but the same thing happened during the boot now. My friend said that it used to happen like this when his laptop overheated. His laptop was pretty hot. He thanked for installing W10 and I left. The next day he texted that his laptop is doing the same thing. I was like "but you said that it usually does that", he answered "it used to do it ever 3-4 hours but now it does it ever 5 mins". I searched the web again and found so many things that could have caused it. From viruses to fan overheating. I went over to him again. The laptop was ice cold but still did the same thing. We took out the battery and booted it only using only AC power. Still the same. My friend said that he NEVER cleaned viruses from the day when he bought his laptop (which was 2 years ago). Since W10 uninstalls your anti-malware software and the PC restarts every few mins we are not able to even install any new software on it. I currently have no idea why are the shutdowns happening. Currently I feel like I'm the one responsible for them because I'm the one that installed W10 on his laptop. If anyone knows how to fix this problem please help me because I'm really in an uncomfortable place now *Sad

  2. Windows power scheme's broken. Plugging in Laptop causes it to throttle to .76ghz. unplugging power adapter and system runs correctly at 3.75ghz

By the way. i've ditched w10. I've uninstalled it on every pc i have. Every system became unstable that it was installed on. W10 upgrade on Alienware computers is not recommended.

I saw this issue over the last few months and wasnt sure it was another w10 issue or not. Turns out its something to do with windows and power management being broken.

google'ing the terms laptop throttled at .76 ghz reports lots of results with no real fix. So it has to do with some w8/w10 patch that occurred after 6/15. I only noticed my laptop throttling sometime after that.

so far i've checked all power settings. so please dont ask me to check that again. its not max or min processor in any power profile.

I've updated computer drivers and bios.

If you have had this issue and have a fix, not a guess please reply.

    thank you

  4. HP Laptop restarts every few mins after W10 installation

Since it's an HP laptop, you might have some success going to the HP Support forums and posting there. Lots of folks are having problems on HP laptops that were upgraded to Win10.

Is Windows 10 more demanding of the hardware ? (just curious)

Rfruth, no, it isn't, but mileages vary depending on what hardware is being upgraded.
(In most cases the newer memory management and smaller overall size of W10 makes it better for older machines that can run it)

    OP,

Questions, which any support person is going to ask, so unfortunately what you written above, while a good description of what occurred, has no details to make it something that can be easily corrected.

    Laptop MODEL.

"After it finished installing the laptop restarted and it wrote something like "Configuring devices..." and after a minute or so an error popped up saying that the installation can not continue because some devices aren't comfortable with W10."

What was the exact error? What device?

"The laptop restarted again and then gave us another error saying to click "OK' to restart our PC. I clicked it the laptop restarted and gave the same error over and over again. I searched the internet for answers and found out that I had to change the value in "regedit" of some setup.exe file from 1 to 3. I did that and the installation finished successfully."

What was the new error? What article did you look at to make a registry change? What setup file (for what application) was altered?

If his lappy was doing strange things like shutting down on it's own, ensuring it's clean before an upgrade is a checklist item.

I'm thinking graphics driver issues for that upgrade.

I have an HP DV7 (6 years old) with no issues on the upgrade other than touchpad forced updates during the insider program that affected anyone with synaptics and HP.

Try booting it to safe mode, if good, install Malwarebytes and scan.

  8. HP Laptop restarts every few mins after W10 installation

I asked him his model he said he has forgotten it. I told him to find it out by pressing fn+esc but the PC doesn't react to that. The device wasn't specified just "Configuring devices..." There's the article that helped me: during installation of windows | HERESJAKEN
