Windows 10: HP Laptop Screen Resolution Issues

I have been putting off updating to Windows 10 on a Hewlitt Packard G60 laptop, however, today, the computer did upgrade.

It seems as if the Windows 10 installation worked, with the exception of two issues.

1. The screen resolution has been changed to 1024x728, and there is no way to change it to anything but lower resolution, so this causes the graphics to be stretched horizontally.

2. The picture used for the desktop has been rotated 90 degrees counter clockwise. I assume this is also a result of whatever the issue with the resolution is.

This laptop has a Mobile Intel 4 series express chipset adapter, and apparently has the most updated driver.

Can anyone help, or let me know if there is another driver for this somewhere? If not, can someone tell me how to revert back to Windows 7, because this is not acceptable.

My laptop's main screen shows blank after a temporary resolution change

I needed to downsize my laptop's screen resolution for a particular HP BIOS maintenance, and after resetting it back to full resolution the main screen shows blank, all desktop icons and task bar moved to the extended monitor. I can't revert it back through
display settings.

OS = Windows 10 Home 64-bit

Laptop = HP Notebook (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz))

System board = 828B 75.24

System BIOS = F.27

 

The adjustment slider bar is no longer present in the display window.

unable to adjust screen brightness as of 10/30 windows 10 update. The adjustment slider bar is no longer present in the display window. Any ideas of how to resolve this issue? Running HP laptop . AMD and intel display adaptor drivers are up to date.

Hello jsrfo Welcome to the Ten Forums! and world of "Buggy Upgrade Installs"!

While you can revert back to 7 as long as you haven't run the DiskCleanup tool or removed the Windows.old folder quite yet the problem typically seen with upgrades from 7 to 10 is going three versions newer and running into headaches which result in forcing a clean install to follow! Too bad you are just now arriving here since there is a guide for skipping the initial upgrade to simply see a working copy of 10 go without headaches!

Recently another HP laptop upgraded to 10 from 7 had also come out "Buggy y y y y y" as all heck while already knowing a clean install would follow to clean up the mess! Other then that 10 runs all too much a lot like 7 but is the newer form of the WinMin kernel in use as well as seeing the newer form of a Start menu brought back.

The fact that the display there came out sideways doesn't clearly indicate that the upgrade is actually what went sideways on you not seeing everything go on as it should! I will still point you at a couple of guides seen here at TenF that will be for Windows 10 - Clean Install regular guide showing the how things are done you will still want to lookover anyways.

I wouldn't worry any about this being strictly a 10 related problems since displays going sideways has been around since XP at least as well as seen with Vista and 7! Speaking of HP in particular I think one of the support threads could well work for you as far as the three key CTRL-ATL- Up arrow not Down or Left or Right arrow key pressed together to see if that will snap it back for you. Did you have to press the Ctrl-Alt-Del combo for any reason lately?You may have accidently hit the left arrow key when going to hit the Delete key and bingo! My screen is sideways - HelpLine

Tried the ctrl-alt-arrow, and that didn't work. Now to clarify, it's the Desktop background picture that's turned a quarter turn to the left, not the icons, which are all OK, just stretched due to the resolution issue. So, I'm not sure if you're stating the ctrl-alt-arrow is for everything or the desktop background.

I haven't had a chance to get into the other items you pointed out, but will this evening and then report back. Are you saying I have to do another install? If so, fine, as I'd rather have 10 than 7. I already have 10 on a few other computers, and my Toshiba laptop upgraded without incident.

The references there wouldn't generally be recommended for only the wallpaper seeing a 90 degree change but for the entire display while an upgrade that comes out buggy doesn't always want to play by the same rule book! The main idea was to try out even the weirdest option to see if a fast fix could be found before the need to see a full fresh copy of 10 go on.

Unfortunately a buggy upgrade is all too common not only for 10 but from one version to the next regardless of 2000 to XP or XP to Vista or XP or Vista to 7, 8, 8,1 or now 10. You will notice the first links were to show you the option to avoid the need for upgrade install entirely as well as the guide that will take you through the steps to see a working clean install go on.

From the looks of things as far the max resolution despite the correct display being on still being limited to 1024x768 on what should be the 1366x768 indicating the horizontal as well as widescreen aspect ratios are caught in a spin cycle. Something didn't go on like it should have as far as the Windows side of the display goes it would seem. If that was the G60-120US model that also saw Vista as an option when the model was first out which present another problem as far as how new a version you can go and still get the actual correct drivers as far as 10 goes on it. The problem in looking up the exact model you have there is knowing what comes after the G60-? 100xx? 101xx? 102XX 103XX etc. on and on with something like 127 different models(laptops and hybrids both) with the G60 in the model number. If you know what the rest of the model number is and find it in the list the next step is to see if that model sees support upto 8.1 since 64bit 8.1 drivers for the most part will go right on 10 and work without issues! But if that model only saw Vista, 7 support the anomalties are the result of not seeing support for 10 with the model simply being too old and HP simply moved on to a newer model series. And too often not only with HP but just about every brand laptop you can run into that.

 

Have you been to HP's website and downloaded the latest video driver? According to the spec sheet your laptop should be running an NVidia 8200M.

The G60-120US was simply an example since the full model number wasn't posted. Typically with the generic display drivers already included with 10 it should be seeing the 1366x768 without a problem unless that model he has there has a display other then the 15.6" size such as a 16" or 17" depending on the actual model while with 127 models in just that model series alone you want the exact match.

If you look closer at the OS selector being Microsoft Windows and the version you see Vista or 7 as I suspected for the G60-120US. You may not find any model that will see 8 or 8.1 drivers available due to how old that model series is to begin with and be forced back to 7! Nothing for even 8.1 won't be good for 10! It's highly doubtful any 64bit drivers besides the WiFi adapter will even work on 10 and why things ended up buggy. Hi.

The full model number is G60-519WM. Got this a few years back at Wal-Mart, and is just used as an internet terminal, and some Office applications.

The HP website lists the PC with the OS as either Win7 or Win10. When you search, it appears that it recommends seeing if Windows Update has appropriate drivers, or if various forums can recommend third party drivers.

Looks like all the latest Win7 drivers were installed on this laptop, so it looks bleak.

So, I guess what I am reading points that I need to go back to Win7? Guess there's nothing out there for a laptop this old?

I'm afraid that's a bit more then just a little bleak! *Banghead*Doh*Doh Typical OEM for you! What the HP page there shows there was 7 without any further option for Vista at this point or 10 but nothing for 8, 8.1 indicating there never was any. *Sad

 

OK. Then my guess is to just go back to Windows 7, and forget about it???

Too bad because Windows 10 is what appears to be the crest of the new wave between good Windows OS versions. Seems like Microsoft botches up a few in between good ones.

Wish there were alternate drivers out there to try, third party, or not.

Too old! You are talking "Three Versions Newer" as far as Windows is concerned. In the past some might have used the 64bit Server 2003 drivers on the 64bit XP Pro but despite desktop to server they were still much closer by version. Vista/7 saw a tight bond as far as being able to run anything Vista on 7. 8 allowed 7 drivers to work while 8.1 was moving away with 10 now being that 3rd version.

The same goes for any number of softwares. I couldn't run the 2014 build for the av software used on 7 where at first I ended up with the 2016 beta until finally getting the 2015 on. On the new laptop that saw the finished 2016 go on there. All you can do now of course would be what has already apparently been seen being the 10 installer downloading the drivers available which were for 7 and you saw the result.

I will say the 10 installer saves a great deal of time locating drivers for you compared to the need to have everything already on disk or downloaded ahead of time when seeing a fresh install take place. The 7 laptop I had upgraded here was a newer model HP that did see 64bit 8.1 drivers available which allowed 10 to go on and run without problems since HP had extended support for it. Not so for the older Vista/7 series being the problem you have there.

Newer model with at least 8-8.1 drivers yes. No 8-8.1 support seen? Nada *cry Sorry but I know it stinks! But that's how these companies operate in order to get you to buy newer every time! It was just like trying to find a board that could still see 98SE run after 2003-04! No way it was happening with custom builds even! I had kept 9x running for as long as possible like I have 7 still going here having bought a separate 10 license. The second case strictly sees Insider Preview builds along with the 7 Pro install there I now have on a second drive added in. The next build however may not see any 7 support to work with by then.

 

I think he already has been since those are the only drivers the 10 installer could come up with. You can still experiment but don't expect much! Generally 3 versions newer means just that as far as compatibility being ancient history. The wallpaper being turned sideways and not being able to change the screen res suggests it was likely a problem seen with the upgrade itself while a fresh install without seeing the update option checked off might be the way to proceed for this type of test.

You would have to pick and choose each driver set separately starting with the display adapter driver(s) first to see how it went. Then the sata controllers, sound, network adapter, WiFi, etc. one at a time. With the HP laptop here that suddenly saw the display quit entirely where I suspect the integrated graphics chip went I was forced to get the best information on it not even having a model number you could find but the 12075 Broadcom adapter number to find the 64bit 8.1 drivers at the HP support.
