Windows 10: HP Notebook windows 10 blue screen then stuck on system repair mode

My boyfriends HP Notebook windows 10 displayed enter password when he started it but he does not use a password and had not set it up for password. He tried to reboot it then stuck in loop would not open just the swirly arrow he said for a long time. He then proceeded to hit Ctrl F12 it went to blue screen and said please wait and then went to the circle arrow and could not continue and then it shut off and said it was restarting but would not restart. He tried to get it to recovery mode - except he never set a recovery point. Now he got it to the system repair screen where it is stuck - any suggestions on what happened or how to fix it? He has only had it about 6 months or less. Is this an update issue? He said it did not display anything about updates but another one was just released????

Stuck in Windows 10 Upgrade

My computer seems to be stuck in a Windows 10 failed upgrade loop. I was running fine on a beta version of Windows 10, and then I came downstairs one morning to see it repeatedly booting, attempting to repair, then rebooting. The steps I've taken to diagnose are:

• Attempting to boot off a USB drive (with all drives disabled in BIOS) - this fails at the point of the blue windows screen
  
• Attempting to boot the machine itself and getting into "repair/safe mode" using F7
  
• Looking at the BIOS for obvious failures (e.g. RAM that should be there is missing) - nothing obvious is wrong.
  

I am fairly certain the build version was 9926. For many months, the system would attempt to upgrade, and then say "it failed" for some reason and roll back.

Suggestions for next steps?
