Windows 10: HP Pavilion 15 randomly shuts down incorrectly if fast startup enabled

I've just updated an HP Pavilion 15 from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 (Home 64 bit). If fast startup is enabled, the laptop freezes at the very least step of the shutting down process. The shutting down process goes like this:

1. First you click on shut down
2. The shut down screen appears
3. The screen turns off and then the fan starts to spin at high speed
4. After 4-5 seconds, the fan stops
5. The laptop is completely turned off, no lights are turned on (in most of PC's)

Well, my problem is that randomly, the Pavilion 15 freezes after step 4 has been completed, with the light of the ON/OFF button turned on forever. Sometimes it turns off correctly, but many other times this happens. If I disable the fast startup, this won't happen and it will always turn off correctly.

What can I do?
How is it that it's random?

I've tested this with no apps running on background, so that can't be the reason, besides, no apps or programs can freeze the system after the step 4 has been completed, since they are all shut down after step 1.

Also, the fast startup option was activated when I was using Windows 8.1 and never had a single problem with this laptop.

[Solved] Windows 10 not shutting down after Creator's update

I have had the same shutdown problem since the latest Creator update. I didn't have the problem on the earlier version of Creator but my Desktop refused to shutdown for over 5 minutes after the 'Upgrade'. The solution in my case was, as mentioned previously,
disable Fast startup. My Normal shutdown speed returned (2 seconds display goes followed by 15 seconds to power off {SSD for O/S}). Fast startup seems to add a further 5 minutes!!

Interestingly my HP laptop with same Creator Update shuts down exactly as before the upgrade and the Fast startup is enabled.

It's usually best to just leave Fast Startup turned off when you have issues with it turned on. If Windows is installed on a SSD, you'll most likely not notice any or much difference in startup time with Fast Startup turned on or off.

Well, I disagree with that, you definitely notice the difference when you have fast startup activated, even when using an SSD. With an HDD the difference is huge.

This HP Pavilion 15 has an HDD and deactivating the fast startup is not a very good solution, it takes MINUTES until you can use the laptop if you deactivate fastboot, and with fastboot activated it takes 30 seconds or less.

What kind of troubleshoot can I do? Where can be the problem or incompatibility?

I've just tested to turn on and then turn off the laptop. I've done it 4 times and all of them ended up in a successfully turned off laptop.

By the way, in Windows 8.1 I had the fast boot activated and neved had a single problem or freeze.

 

Just to make sure, "Fast Boot" and "Fast Startup" are two different settings.

Usually, restarting the computer may sort out any fast startup issue. If it doesn't then you could try troubleshooting with a clean boot to see if it anything may stand out.

Oh, I always refer to the energy option that says fast startup, not talking about the BIOS option called "fast boot", sorry.

I've been turning on and off the laptop for 9 times and all of them were successful. I've tried for the first time (after installing Windows 10) to sleep and hibernate the laptop, before those 9 tries.

Could have that fixed the issue?

 

No problem. I knew you meant "Fast Startup", but just wanted to make sure. *Smile

I find that Fast Startup will work fine most of the time, and occasionally you might have that issue pop-up for no apparent reason.

If you're not having any issue with it turned on, then you should be good to go. If it acts up on you, then hopefully a quick restart will sort it.

What "doesn't let me sleep" is that it's random. How can something like this be random?

In the past I faced a similar issue, but it happened always. When I turned off this laptop, it wouldn't turn off completely never, and it was an issue with an SSD it had for cache. I removed the SSD and problem solved forever.

But this error is random, that's what blows my mind *Sick

 

Yeah, that's the main issue for some with Fast Startup is the random issue with no apparent reason.

 

Today I shut it down several times and it's been working perfectly. Looks like it solved by itself magically, I don't understand a thing, hahaha. It will probably happen in the future though, things don't get fixed magically.

 

After 3 days using the laptop normally, it has not happened again. Please Bill Gates, explain these kind of miracles, now. Da hell...
